Hi everyone, I hope this community will help me. I recently got a new PC, and was excited to try a few games on it. My setup is a MSI katana 17 B13VGK, with a RTX4070, i7 13620H, and 32Go RAM. By my understanding, I should be able to run this with maxed out settings in 1080p without any issue, when I tried RDR2, I was barely getting 10 fps mean on the performance test. The game is set to my dedicated GPU and not the integrated one, and any tweaks I tried (deleting pipeline files) did not change anything.

If you have any ideas, I’m open to anything that could help me enjoy this game ! Thanks in advance

Have you made sure you graphics drivers are up to date? Depending on when that laptop was manufactured the installed graphics drivers could be pretty out of date by now.

I don’t know if GeForce experience is installed or not (and I do apologize but I don’t know how computer savvy you are).

Other than that I would try verifying game files through steam.

Then I would try running it on integrated and see what that does.

Maybe check for any option windows updates that it may have skipped over.

Check all device drivers are working correctly from device manager.

I’m gonna crash since I got work in 6 hours but if I dream up anything else I’ll let you know lol.

Thanks again again :) All the points you suggested have been checked, I’ll try again from the device manager as you suggested, and I’ll take anything you dreamed of!

        Disable Nvidia resizable bar?

        Disable Xbox game mode?

Set priority for the game to high in task manager?

Check Nvidia control panel and make sure it isn’t trying to render the game at like 8k or something weird?

Download direct x 12 manually? (I really think this might resolve the issue).

Idk threaten your laptop with bodily harm if it doesn’t cooperate? Lol

Hello again! I finally succeeded to make it work in a satisfying way. The key issue was indeed an adapter output problem, BUT for some reason rdr2 kept saying that the integrated graohics had more vram than the dedicated gpu, and switched to it even though I forced it. On top of that the vsync for some reason capped the fps at 30, weirdly.

Anyway, thanks again for taking the time to answer me and suggest all those things, you really were a light in the dark in all this troubleshooting!

I’ve been stuck in troubleshooting hell before. It sucks.

Plus RD2 is a fantastic game so I wanted to make sure you got to enjoy it lol.

            Have fun with it.

I hadn’t had this much trouble since making Battle for Middle Earth 2 work on windows 10 a few years back. I’ll be sure to play the hell out of this now that it works :)

I’m fairly tech savvy as I’ve been working in and around the IT space for most of my adult life but even I occasionally run into stuff I cannot fix for the life of me.

No matter what I did I could never get PUBG to run smoothly for me. I literally built 3 different PCs. Moved twice. 3 different internet connections from two different providers. If I ever “hot dropped” I could not loot anything for the first few seconds. My friends never had this issue. But when we would land I would often pick up a gun and ammo and when I went to shoot someone else the gun and all the ammo would teleport outta my hands and onto the floor. To this day I am convinced that I just had a ghost following me around fucking with me over that particular issue. I never got it fixed and eventually I moved onto other games.

It’s been a long time since I did any laptop gaming but you need to be plugged into power for the dedicated GPU to run I think. Aside from that I would check all the power settings for the system. Make sure it isn’t in some eco mode or anything else silly.

I have a desktop with roughly equivalent hardware that I played RD2 on in 1440p and I was able to crank everything and still have 60+ fps consistently. Its been awhile so I forget the exact my numbers but I think in most areas I was able to stay over 100. It’s really only the cities and other densely populated areas where my fps drop down a bit.

Edit: I forgot to ask if you have run any benchmarks in other games or if you have only tried RD2. At least that way you can determine if it’s a red dead 2 issues or a system wide issue.

Thanks for answering! I kept my laptop plugged in, and as for other games I was able to run Helldivers 2 or Sea of Thieves both absolutely maxed out on 1080p with more than 100 fps.

This is why I asked here, it really seems there’s a specific issue with rdr2 that I can’t seem to figure out

My only other guesses would be switching it from running on vulkan to direct x.

Or–> Settings --> Graphics --> Video --> Output Adapter (toggle).

If it’s on 0 switch to 1 or vice versa.

Thank you again for your time! The output adapter is set to 1, the Nvidia GPU. As for DirectX, it starts with an error telling me to update drivers, even though I ensured they all were set to the latest version… If you have any other questions, or idea, I’m up for it!
