In September of last year, Swedish company IKEA through its main franchisee INGKA launched a special online site in Norway and Spain allowing the sale of second hand goods.

Ikea Preowned is a second hand experiment in Norway and Spain which is due to be extended in 2025

Known as Ikea Preowned is was tested in Oslo and Madrid and customers could either sell their furniture and other items back to IKEA or directly to individuals with no commission to IKEA.

If I put a too positive spin on this and ignore capitalist shenanigans, I could see this theoretically (in an economy where enshittication isn’t real) leading to a paradigm where Ikea actually starts making products which are durable and easy to fix, so that the products keeps their value when resold again and again.

I wouldn’t mind them profiting from that kind of service if the prices were moderate. How much better would it be to buy a desk that’s properly made massive wood and well taken care of instead of what is essentially glorified cardboard.

But that would require the new ones to be rather expensive, but that would sort of be the purpose; for the secondhand being as good as new, basically, but much more affordable.

Anyway that’s probably as realistic as a Star Trek utopia.
