It was just signed. “10% on all imports from China and 25% on imports from Mexico and Canada — America’s largest trading partners — except for a 10% rate on Canadian oil.”

That fact that they’re only putting 10% on oil and exempting other forms of energy is a sign for us Canadians that it’s also their achilles heel, and adding an export tariff on those would definitely pass a message, although a retaliatory increase in tariffs would be certain.

Curious to see what’s going to be the response.

Reminder that while these tariffs are the big news item, focus extremely hard on what isn’t being today. Work within your communities and harass the fuck out of your politicians, Republican AND Democrat. Maintenance will be the word for at least two years.

By all means, we must do our best in the next election so we can minimize the damage.

That being said… midterm elections don’t mean shit when the executive oversteps into territory only the legislature is supposed to have control over. How does the President have such wide control over government spending when that’s supposed to be Congress’s constitutional responsibility?

We’re rapidly approaching the complete nullification of the legislature at this point. How long until Palpatine abolishes the Senate?

Because it’s on Congress to push back when another branch oversteps its power, and more than half of it is actively cheering on the destruction of our society. I can’t speak to whether we’ll have free and fair midterms, but if we do, electing leftists to congress would be vital to stymieing the damage quickly.

But, yeah, who knows. That’ll take at least 2 years. MAGA has already done incalculable damage, and it’s been 2 weeks.

Or the court system! Which was packed by Trump, And supposedly presiding over a case where the defendant is the man who gave you the job doesn’t require recusal. Absolutely shameful.

By all means, keep resisting, but if you think you can back out of a dictatorship with an election you’re kidding yourself. He’s already stealing powers from congress (like funding decisions) and installing his cronies in places of power. I’m not even sure there will be a midterm, but if there is it won’t be free and open. We’re past elections now.

Shameful, but when I see my first Alberta or Washington plate in BC vandalized with Fuck You I’m going to smile inside.

BC and AB actually have identical support for the provincial NDP parties, believe it or not. Statistically speaking, vandalizing a BC or AB plate comes with identical statistical likelihood of vandalizing an NDP voter.

He’s been told. Over and over again. Either he doesn’t understand the consequences or doesn’t care. Both are entirely possible. He’s an absolute idiot. But he’s still answering to people. Why do those people want this is what we should be asking.

The world will be smart to tariff in return only those goods that Trump supporters peddle. This happened last time with bourbon, and it cratered corn producers and we wound up bailing out Agriculture. They made the country pay for the tariffs and our deficit zoomed. It made Trump scramble for months to try and fix the damage. He’s even more vulnerable to reprisal like that now that he relies on the oligarchs to keep prevalence, all the world has to do is make Amazon, FB, and Tesla / Twitter suffer

So one one hand I think I represent like a quarter of the world when I say that seeing the US slide out of global hegemony is going to give me the best schadenfreude in my whole life, but on the other hand it’s hard not to feel bad for Americans here. Well try to survive the hellscape that’s coming at least, everyone.
