This is an old petition that the government has already responded to.
Government responded
This response was given on 19 November 2024
The Government was elected on a manifesto that made clear there will be no return to EU membership. However, we are determined to reset the UK-EU relationship, putting it on a more solid footing.
Yes, but if you read my title, the goal is to get it to debate.
Also, “old” is subjective, the response was only 2.5 months ago!
Sorry, I signed it because I agree it needs to be debated.
However the contempt for what we want was already shown.
So pointless, but fuck it I’ll sign it anyway.
How many are willing to accept using the Euro and full support of the Schengen zone?
I’d be fine with both. Schengen would actually be nice, and Euro adoption would make some things simpler.
Honestly, at this point I’d be massively on board with both. Schengen i would see as a bonus and the euro I could live with
Neither of those would happen and tbh I don’t think the EU particularly care to impose either.
The UK is an island nation so schegen doesn’t have the same benefits that are off value to continental Europe. The exception might be if Ireland wanted to join schegen then Northern Ireland might also join schegen to simplify the border. Obvs that comes with it’s own complexities.
The Euro is an interesting topic. I wonder if there’s a middleground where GBP is retained as the primary currency but large companies must also accept Euro for goods. Most of us purchase goods on debit card so if we’re rarely using cash it makes little difference to us if the transaction is in GBP or Euro, provided the prices are shown in GBP so the right wing don’t have a hissy fit.
Similarly contracts and trade with European contracts would be done in Euro but small companies doing business within the UK can continue to use GBP.
This appeases both sides. The average Brit still sees GBP but EU citizens are free to use Euro
You get down voted, but your Euro argument honestly sounds like the same situation was metric/imperial weights and measures.
Has any petition on that ever actually changed anything? I feel like it’s sole purpose is some kind of pressure release valve and every parliament discussion stemming from it boils down to “No”.
The petition system exists to make the people think they have a voice. Much like parish councils etc. Keep the busybodies busy with nothing so they don’t stick their nose in something.
No. We’ve had 20 years of them I think, and none have done more than spur a conversation between a handful of people.
I’d like to see the system abolished and force people to get up and do something to get their voice “heard” because then it actually might be.
Clicktivism for people who don’t want to get on their feet. That site is less than useless.
I’m sure they will implement it, right after they implement all the other popular petitions.
Is there any legal reason why the UK cannot rejoin the EU?
No legal reason afaik. It’s more the fact they would have to go through the entire process again and they will have to make more concessions this time. Anyone who says otherwise is fooling themselves.
Well, the best time to plant an apple tree is twenty years ago
They should start sooner rather than later

I’d sign it if I could, but I’m not a UK citizen. Brexit was forced on the UK, just as we’re having fascism/ authoritarianism forced on us in the US. smh. Hoping we can resolve these manufactured issues, and get on with fixing the climate, save our planet, feed, clothe, and house people. It’s the stupid timeline. Stay smart, clever, creative my friends.
And with under 16m signatures. That debate will result in a no. Unfortunaly no government is going to do this with out evidence of a clear majority of support.
Obviously. But I think it’s good to normalise discussion about it, which is what this debate might do, and so it might hint to the government that people would like a closer relationship with the EU.
Obviously it won’t result in the UK joining the EU.
