Click the 3 dots on the right, select “do not recommend channel”.
It works better than I expected.
really? it does next to nothing for me
youtube is shite. i hate their clickbait thumbnails. i try to avoid visiting.
I’ve been downloading my favorite long form retrospective videos for a few weeks now getting ready for YouTube just shit itself in stupidity.
Yeah, I was watching something live though.
I understand. I was more of making the point that YouTube will continue to do this, and warning others to be prepared for the worst!
Yeah, I download whole channels as .zims now. I don’t want to use the site anymore than I have to.
Do you have a good source for learning about .zims? I’ve only ever seen it as Wikipedia use. :)
https://kiwix.org/ is a good starting point. https://wiki.openzim.org/wiki/OpenZIM more info there (and on that wiki as a whole)
Amazing how aggressively YT tries to stuff you with extreme right wing trash. You can block, you can hide, you can fill your history with ultra tankie content… and still get sieg heil content. God fucking damnit.
Outrage and engagement
I have my search and watch history off and I watch recipes and music videos. The right panel with recommendations is always filled with right-wing videos. Even if opened in an incognito tab.
It’s not the algorithm… It’s how YouTube have been prepared on purpose.
It’s not the algorithm… It’s how YouTube have been prepared on purpose.
It is an algorithm that was designed in a way that promotes that kind of shit because on average it keeps people watching videos (and therefore ads). They use the data from signed in people to determine wha to shove in the face of a new user.
It’s algorithm lol. That sort of shit is what get the most click and is the most relevant to current event and where you stay, that’s why the algorithm show it to you, they’re trying their luck to get you clicking.
I don’t know if that’s true. They probably just try to push the most rage inducing stuff your way. It just happens so, that right talking points are rage inducingly dumb
They may not even be trying, it’s just an inherent feature of the business model. They make money from ads. The more time people engage with the content, the more money they make. People argue more in the comments (or, in other words, engage more) when they’re angry. So by tuning everything for max revenue you get ragebait bubbling up as a natural consequence.
:sigh: Just turn off watch history and search history, clear both, and either search for what you want or subscribe and use the subscriptions page.
My YT homepage is blank and glorious.
Nothing good will ever come from suggestion algorithms.
I have both turned off, this is in the right sidebar.
That’s why you’re getting that stuff. They don’t (want you to know they) know anything about you, so they’re just feeding you the generic sludge which generates the most engagement: Ragebait. My history is enabled, and I just get an endless flow of woodworking videos, nerdy facts and comedians.
yeah, i hide that with UBO lol. that, or enable theater mode to get rid of it.
You can click on that little ellipsis menu and either choose “not interested” or “block this channel”. It should improve your recommendations.
What I get are the ads so many PragerU and turning point US ads. No I don’t want your conservative garbage go away. I just keep reporting them until google stops me I know it doesn’t do anything but it feels nice to hit that report button and say it’s spam/misleading
There was a TED talk by Zeynep Tufekci in 2017 (“We’re building a dystopia just to make people click on ads”) – (YouTube*: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iFTWM7HV2UI) that briefly talks about this:
(*I’m aware of the irony in linking there)So in 2016, I attended rallies of then-candidate Donald Trump to study as a scholar the movement supporting him. I study social movements, so I was studying it, too. And then I wanted to write something about one of his rallies, so I watched it a few times on YouTube. YouTube started recommending to me and autoplaying to me white supremacist videos in increasing order of extremism. If I watched one, it served up one even more extreme and autoplayed that one, too. If you watch Hillary Clinton or Bernie Sanders content, YouTube recommends and autoplays conspiracy left, and it goes downhill from there.
Well, you might be thinking, this is politics, but it’s not. This isn’t about politics. This is just the algorithm figuring out human behavior. I once watched a video about vegetarianism on YouTube and YouTube recommended and autoplayed a video about being vegan. It’s like you’re never hardcore enough for YouTube.
So what’s going on? Now, YouTube’s algorithm is proprietary, but here’s what I think is going on. The algorithm has figured out that if you can entice people into thinking that you can show them something more hardcore, they’re more likely to stay on the site watching video after video going down that rabbit hole while Google serves them ads.
These days it might also be about politics, but the motivation to capture attention to serve ads is still the priority.
I’m guessing it’s because I just don’t watch political content on YouTube at all (for this reason), but I actually don’t get any political recommendations right or left. It’s very much just project, gaming, and photography channels and the only time I see suggestions outside that, it’s because I specially strayed from my usual.
I stick to Lemmy for political stuff simply because it doesn’t affect my other algorithms on any other platforms.
Same problem here. Despite pretty milquetoast subscriptions, I get tons of alt-right pipeline content suggested to me.
I watch too much Kpop for this to be recommended to me
