From my experience Photon is the best web client, Eternity is the best Android client and Voyager or Mlem seems to be the best iOS clients. In the free and open source side.

I don’t wanna use proprietary client for the fediverse if great FOSS alternative exists.

But here are some proprietary client that looks great in my opinion Connect for Android and Arctic for iOS.

Freedom as in FOSS? I vaguely remember the dev saying they may OS it eventually but yes for now it’s closed. Still free though.

Yes it is free as in free beer, it connect to a network based on an open protocole of federated free (as in freedom) software instances. It also value users privacy and respect their digital integrity, could do more to that but it’s not even comparable to reddit lol. It’s not black or white.

Still using Sync here, what exactly am I missing out on? Tried voyager years ago but coming from Reddit and using Sync for that, it was a pretty natural jump.

It hasn’t been updated in quite awhile, and I have heard some Lemmy features are still broken - I think some types of inline images and markdown mainly, and some upcoming api changes may break it completely in the nearish future.

I was in the same boat; I’ve been using sync for years. Recently, I’ve definitely noticed issues with certain instances and comment sections. Search was also completely broken. According to what I’ve read, it appears to be a version mismatch issue. Since sync hasn’t been updated in a year, I’ve cancelled my subscription and moved over to Summit.

I’m using Jerboa and have been since the start. I see no reason to switch. It was a teeny bit rough around the edges in the earliest months following the Reddit API changes, but it’s been smooth sailing since then.

I literally just switched from Sync to Voyager on Android last night. So far, I’m enjoying Voyager much more.

Sync was fine, but the developer only pops in once in a great while, then he ghosts for months (or even years). Getting any problems resolved means waiting until he happens to show up again, then hoping he notices your specific complaint.

I managed to get .webm content to display in the app by catching him right before he posted a major update a couple years ago. But he hasn’t responded to any other issues I’ve posted about since.

There’s a major incompatibility with newer versions of the Lemmy software where Sync shows a comment count but cannot display the comments. So at the moment I can’t see any comments from posts hosted on sh.itjust.works. I know that there’s other less severe issues too (I think spoilers are semi-broken in some instances).

The summary updates don’t work for 90+% of posts (idk if the feature is available for free users - wanted to support development and bought the lifetime membership).

Also I persistently get a notification that there are no messages to return. I can’t seem to get rid of it.

I’m sure there’s other stuff, but these are the ones that I notice.

Did you uninstall it purely because it hasn’t received any updates or was there some feature you wanted or bug fixed that led you to that?

I’ve been using sync for nearly a decade (maybe longer, I forget when exactly) and it’s not uncommon for LJ to not update sync for long periods of time, so I don’t really see no updates in nearly a year as an issue. (Plus as a dev myself, I hate the idea of constant releases, though I do spacecraft software so maybe I’m just really oddly biased)

I’d been experiencing a bug where I couldn’t see comments on communities from my local instance. It would show the comment count but not show any comments.

I’d been using sync for the same time, since LJ first released it. It’s an issue because the Lemmy API is changing faster than Reddits, and he’s also charging a heavy subscription fee. I think with that there should be an expectation of support and updates. At the very least, provide communication about what he’s doing and working on.

I’m also a dev, and it’s funny you say that because I hate the idea of NOT doing regular releases! You want to release small changes frequently, get the value out and get fast feedback. You don’t want users to sit on bugs for 6 to 12 months while you wait for a huge big batch release. But I’m a dev who works primarily on backend serverless stuff, we can release as much as we want, every 5 minutes if we wanted to. Obviously phone app development has a lower release cadence as it has to be approved by the official stores and roll out, but the way LJ seems to ghost a project and then do a huge release is kinda weird.

I don’t want to sit on an app that’s buggy and getting zero updates while Lemmy instances keep getting updated, hoping that one day the dev might come back and update it.

The dude just needs to communicate what he’s doing to the community.

I wish I could say I was surprised. The sync dev fucked me in a premium reddit license years ago when they invalidated the existing licenses and made people pay again for the premium to keep having it on reddit.

Glad I went with voyager over them.

It has been great and is the UI that I want to use however it has slowly been slipping downhill over the last year and a half. That last update from this week has fucked more things than it fixed and introduced new issues as well.

I want it to be great. I want it to work properly but the dev is barely active popping in every 6 months or so to drop an update that might make it better but probably make it worse. It was a better app experience 18 months ago, that’s for sure.

I’ve moved over to trying Voyager because of all this and it is the closest to connect I can find so far.

Thunder is my preferred client, with jerboa being second

Honestly thunder is perfect aside from being a tad slow to load sometimes. And it seems to have a little more tendency to experience network issues, but the UI is everything I could ask for

Jerboa might be my favorite if it showed full size link previews since I usually engage visually before I engage with text

It’s got playable videos, markdown support, guest accounts, search posts and comments, link url support, slick new indicators for accounts, private messaging, keyword filtering toggle, posts now appear immediately in the feed and expanded admin actions.
