Normally I would agree with you. But in this instance, you have to admit he suspiciously seems to care a lot about Putin.
He admires Putin for his approach to shamelessly robbing the wealth of his country into his own pockets and those of his disciples.
That’s the world Trump wants to live in. Floating above the law, riches flowing in without having to do something and commoners praising you as a strong leader. It’s the dream of a person that tries to outrun the sad truth that he is too weak to be successful when actual competition is around.
True. People keep speculating that Putin has some kind of leverage over Trump, like compromising information, to get Trump to dance to the Kremlin’s tune. But I think it’s more likely to be like you say - Trump just admires Putin because Trump wants to be a dictator just like Putin.
