While there are some “hard number” metrics to cite when it comes to how a movie is received, Rotten Tomatoes, Metacritic, IMDB, there’s one that gets circled back to more than others when it comes to audience reception: Cinemascore.
This usually measures what’s a “crowd pleaser,” skewing higher in terms of blockbusters a lot of the time as it tries to measure audience satisfaction. Now, Captain America has the lowest Cinemascore in MCU history, a B-, which may not sound that bad, but in context, it definitely is, especially when you see the overall chart. That would be:
edit: the list is missing some entries and has the ratings wrong for others, so I’ve redone it.

Initial box office receipts are pretty good, and better than other low-scored MCU movies, but this still has to be somewhat alarming for Marvel to have a movie received this poorly. As it stands, this is the third lowest scored film on Rotten Tomatoes, the lowest scored film on Metacritic and the lowest scored on Cinemascore now.
People finished watching the eternals? I was cringing so hard 10 mins in I had to give up. The CGI and dialogue were terrible (from what I recall)
Just a very puzzling entry all around. I think they thought star power would carry the next phase? Then they removed the things that made the team kind of interesting in the first place. Along the way changing the characters so much that even the dozens of actual Eternals fans wouldn’t care about it.
Plus we all know that team at 99% power was Ikarus, who literally just killed himself.
I walked out of that movie not caring about any of those characters (maybe Gil and Thena but they weren’t even a big part)…part of what makes MCU great is that you end up caring about what happens to the characters at the end and the future. I couldn’t care less about the Eternals.
Eternals gets a B? Laughable.
This chart single-handedly destroys any credibility Cinemascore may have had. Cap 4 is better than Quantumania, Eternals, The Marvels, Thor 2 & 4, and Black Widow.
Black widow was terrible, and Thor 2 was pretty middling. The others I haven’t seen… It all seemed like a cash grab and downhill slide after ant man.
Can’t say I am surprised cap 4 got bad reviews, Anthony Mackie has just not been a show stealer as Sam Wilson. He’s not bad in the role, but he’s always kinda broken the MCU immersion for me by being kinda b-list over the top. Of course… I can (and would) say the same about Paul Rudd.
I can (and would) say the same about Paul Rudd.
GASP!
You shut your filthy whore mouth! Paul Rudd is a delight, regardless of the writing, directing, plot, or other actors.
Lol I didn’t say I don’t enjoy him from time to time. I think he’s pretty funny. I said for me he breaks immersion. I’m watching Paul Rudd as Ant Man for example, instead of watching ant man.
Paul Rudd is a gorgeous human being. Anything with him is at least a B+.
Anytime i see Mackie i just remember when eminem destoryed him in 8 mile
How does Dark World score an A-
I fell asleep during that one
That’s the odd one out but perhaps we were less fussy in the early days of the MCU.
No, it absolutely caught all the heat as a terrible movie. It seems impossible that anyone at the time would give it an A-, all that tells me is that this ranking has zero value, it didn’t back then, it doesn’t now.
Worse than Thor Dark World? Really?!?
Dark world wasn’t bad it was the tonal shift. I think Thor has suffered from these shifts in how to showcase his character. Where Ragnarok was the perfect blend serious and comedy, and ant man is the reverse with a blend of comedy and seriousness
Has everyone forgotten about the 2nd black panther movie…don’t blame you if you did, it was also terrible
Yeah, that was a mess and putting it in A really seems to go against all reason.
I’m not sure there’s a single good take in this list
I don’t agree with a few items on the list, but B- for this film is definitely wrong. I think a B is more accurate, or a handful of other films need to be dropped down to B-.
The film has problems, but it’s also fun.
The Eternals should be at the bottom as it’s bad. Followed by Thor: Dark World and Cap 4 in with Quantumania and perhaps The Marvels as flawed, probably unnecessary, but still entertaining enough to be worth seeing.
For me Quantumania is the bottom. It’s the third Ant-Man film but only feels a little bit like an Ant-Man movie, drops the fun side characters, and is bad setup to a plotline that will never happen.
The Marvels is OK but ultimately rushed, which is similar to Brave New World. Brave New World got an extra 30 mins of screen time but instead of letting things breathe or taking time to build characters they just added in a bunch of new rushed plotlines.
Eternals had a similar problem, but I think they executed better. The bummer is that these are all new characters, so it’s harder to care.
Thor Dark World… it’s been a while since I’ve seen it and don’t have much desire to rewatch it… So yeah it can hang out near the bottom.
They need to stick to shows for now, there’s really nothing they haven’t already done that’s worth the big screen trip.
