I have to disagree. It’s not a bad sign because he can ignore the courts. “The Supreme Court ruled that former presidents have broad immunity from criminal prosecution for actions taken while in office, particularly those related to their core executive functions.” He has been ignoring the courts. While his staffers can get in to trouble, he can pardon them for disobeying court orders. Or he can get someone else to disobey court orders, whatever he chooses to do. The Supreme Court has made a colossal mistake with this ruling.
the courts have not yet been fully tested. outright ignoring a supreme court ruling invites the ire of everyone outside of his base. sidestepping a ruling will probably generate more chaos and public indecision - a more likely route for him until there is a direct court order that cannot be sidestepped. if/when we get to this point we will, collectively, have a few very hard choices to make.
no clue what the citizenry, politico, law enforcement, military, et al will chose, but the contours of the game will change dramatically.
if the judiciary covers his ass, then… I dont know whats next. none of this will be good.
The problem is that few stand up to Trump publicly. Those who do (Liz Cheney as an example), are ostracized by the Republican Party. While the Supreme Court shouldn’t be political, Trump could get Congress to expand the number of judges (because which of them are going to stand against Trump?), which would allow the court to be packed with judges who play his game his way.
totally understood. there are a thousand ways that this can go sideways and only a few that end up with us holding onto whats left of a democracy.
in my super red area we recently had the first post election protest* outside of our city hall with more planned this weekend. it was a step in the right direction.
we are in deep, deep trouble my friend but each obviously fascist step this administration takes is a potential eye opener to the public at large and we have seen the “concept of a plan” in some of our reps because of public pressure.
*the organizer of the protest had never even been to a protest before.
