I go to investigate, and they had managed to plug the HDMI cable of one monitor into the other monitor.

I once had a person refuse to troubleshoot a monitor issue over the phone. 2.5 hours away. Swore to me that they hadn’t messed with the monitor cables since it last worked. They had both ends of the HDMI plugged into the same monitor.

To be generous, maybe they’re familiar with DisplayPort daisy-chaining, which is a thing.

Never been a sysadmin, but used to sell electronics. People really have absolutely no idea how any of it works, including pretty straight forward stuff, like displays. Had to explain to a shockingly large number of people that there was no such thing as an ethernet to HDMI adapter and that even if there was, plugging ethernet into their non-smart TV’s HDMI port wouldn’t let them watch Netflix on it.
