Wow, this one if heavily dependent on regional dialects. What is the source, southern?
“For a clock” would be pronounced either “for aye clock” or “for uh clock”, where I’ve lived, which has mostly be above the Mason-Dixon line. “Four o’clock” would be pronounced “for oh clock”. I would never have gotten this because everywhere I’ve lived these would be pronounced differently.
I’m really curious where they’re pronounced the same. I believe it, I must can’t imagine the accent. Must be southern.
“four uh clock” is pretty standard for both 4:00 and for-a-clock where I am in the North-Western US.

Could be one of those people that never learned to read clocks. Worked with a girl fresh out of high school and had to teach her so she would stop asking me what time it was constantly.
What does he need the battery for then?
Maybe he has a digital wall clock at home. Though it would be weird he came to a clock shop when those digital clocks usually just need AA batteries he could’ve found at other common stores.
Oh ok, yes could be he could only read digital clocks I guess. But a great story to be overly obsessive about details about, never the less :)

I ended up misreading this as sort of “Well I don’t know if it’s a clock, that’s why I need the batteries to find out” and found that reasoning to be funnier than the pun which flew over my head initially, simply for being such a comedically unconventional, yet entirely possible situation with several implications that could be made, such as just assuming something must be a clock, and immediately wanting to try using it as such, even though it might not actually be a clock.
Now if only I had something to measure my disappointment like a clock measures time…
