Correct move by Ukrainians. Get people talking!
It’s a (very costly) sacrifice worth making.
I think it’s a good and powerful move.
I don’t have the words to express what I feel and think, but I try my best: they don’t hate the Russians, they hate Russia.

I’m an American. I disagree. The people suck too.

I dunno, I think I’m okay.
Hope more teams follow the protest.
Have they released any statement regarding why they decided to lift the ban?
It was an internal meeting of the the International Esports Federation (IESF) where a vote was taken. There is no official confirmation or statement about it. But the Russian Esports Federation (RESF) has claimed in a statement approval has been granted for players to compete at IESF’s competitions under their own flag.
Here is an article about it: https://esportsinsider.com/2023/08/iesf-votes-to-lift-restrictions-on-russian-players-russian-esports-federation
The statement claims 32 delegates voted in favour of Russia’s re-admittance, while 13 voted against and 25 abstained. Russia’s statement additionally claimed that a separate proposal put forward by Ukraine’s esports federation to suspend Russia’s esports federation from IESF entirely was rejected.
Tells me all I need to know about the IESF
Thank you, it’s a shame to see how little the IESF cares about the wellbeing of all players.
Just looking at the translated comments on the news article, all the Russians making fun of the situation is disgusting.

It’s a shame that most of the groups/people involved voted in favor of admitting Russian players back in, at least under the Russian flag.
I think the decision made by FIDE (International Chess Federation) for their sport is a fine compromise that this E-Sports federation should have adopted as well. In protest of the Ukraine invasion, FIDE banned any players from playing under the Russian or Belarusian flag, but allowed them to play anyways under a neutral, FIDE flag. And for players from Russia that were outspoken against Ukraine or in favor of Russia’s invasion (i.e. Sergey Karjakin), they were penalized and barred from play on an individual case-by-case basis.
It shows that this invasion won’t be tolerated, but at the same time, you as a player will only be punished if you choose to support it on your own volition, rather than by association.
While they are at it they should ban everyone from israel, saudi arabia, cina, egypt and so on
I don’t necessarily disagree, but that’s a whole lot of whataboutism without any other substance.
A few Dota players don’t represent the war crimes their president made. However, I want to believe Russians didn’t participate because of the war, and how even being a part of Russia makes them look bad right now.
Imagine if your leader started a war and all you wanted to do was play video games and live in peace. Individuals don’t represent their country’s views, but a group of people from the same country may.
Those players should join another team if at all possible.
Reinstatement was not about whether they can play or not, it was whether they can participate under the Russian flag.
If you want to “live in peace”, don’t sport the active aggressor’s / terrorist flag.
this is simply not true. This is not Putins war alone, he is backed up by a lot of russian people who actively support his cause, mildly support his politics or don’t care at all (which is basically the same)
Of course there are also people who are afraid to speak up, but they are not the majority in this country. Putins raise to power was also backed up by many russians and they a pretty much doing the same thing that nazi germany was doing before and during WW2…
So please stop saying that this is only putins fault…the hate for the west is very real and very deep in russia’s society
To me, this is why the US is where it is today, and other countries heading the same way.
“This is the way it is, it’s out of my control, and I just want to live my life.”
This is how apathy destroys a nation. Life needs to be uncomfortable for everyone that feels this way so that they participate in voting when they would normally abstain. And in those few wondrous cases, convince them to change their perspective and recognize oppression, be it political or capitalistic. Or for countries that have moved so far as Russia, perhaps revolt.

When bully is allowed into the room you smash its teeth, not run away.
This makes global news and puts real pressure on the International Esports Federation — the group actually capable of policing the bullies — to do their job.
This sucks, but is absolutely the correct play by the Ukrainian team.
Explain to me how the International Esports Federation is capable of policing the Russian government
By continuing to deny the regular Russian people the ability to participate in world events, sooner or later they start to question why and go looking for answers. Then you get a change in government.
It’s not running away, it’s standing up for what is clearly war crimes being committed by a nation.
In this very tournament there are no Russians at all, but it is important to make a mark. I remember Virtus Pro, where in 2022 a Russian player drew a big Z on the minimap. The team was excluded, but was back in 2023 as if nothing had happened.
Found the Vladimir.
