A spokesperson for Gov. Ron DeSantis said Friday that there are no plans for the Republican to meet with President Joe Biden when he travels to Florida on Saturday, contradicting comments Biden made earlier in the day indicating they would.

“We don’t have any plans for the Governor to meet with the President tomorrow,” DeSantis spokesperson Jeremy Redfern told CNN Friday. “In these rural communities, and so soon after impact, the security preparations alone that would go into setting up such a meeting would shut down ongoing recovery efforts.”

Biden had told CNN earlier Friday that “yes,” he did plan to meet with the Florida governor while surveying damage from Hurricane Idalia in the state over the weekend.

DeSantis doesn’t want photos of him next to Biden during the campaign, I bet. Whatever. Both of them simply need to understand the damage, try to instill some faith in the affected people, and make sure the necessary resources continue to get deployed.

Frankly they both just need to listen to FEMA and other agencies to know how bad it is, what is needed for funding, etc.

The whole “visit the scene” thing is theater.

A Leader needs to be seen to care for the People being led to have the faith to rebuild. Soulless bureaucrats in far away place to do not instill such faith.

I don’t buy that. It’s mostly to stop the opposition from saying “look the president doesn’t care about you”.

There is much History (see any Historic account of a Leader rallying his People, as per Joan D’arc, or for a more recent example see Present day Ukraine) to back up my view and yours assumes bad faith which must first be proven.

Whenever a president fails to visit a disaster site in a timely manner the opposition goes nuts over it. Yet nobody expects the president to lead us into battle. They can but don’t - because the opposition doesn’t want to either. So they both stay silent about it.

“He didn’t get there fast enough” is a common criticism. And almost all of the criticism comes from the opposition. It’s political now.

They’re asking you why you felt the need to “both sides” this as if Biden and desantis aren’t listening to experts/playing politics, while Biden is doing everything correctly. It’s disingenuous to act like the one person who is doing the right thing also needs to work on doing better, while the other is actively making it worse and trying to blame everyone but himself.

That isn’t the way that culture behaves. You cooperate only when you are weak not to go further together. They are operating on a zero sum game with no statue of limitations on memory.

Look I have had my share of difficult clients but it is always in my best interest to make sure they are successful. If they are I can be. We cooperate because together we can do what neither of us can do alone. And since the relationship is not one of where I gain they lose we can do that.

However there can only be one president at a time. Biden looking good makes the MeatBall look bad. Even a temporary alliance can haunt the Meatball because everyone knows he only worked together because he had no choice. Cooperation reeks of weakness and since no allowance is given or sought he has to double down.

DeSatan is going to take credit for all the money Biden gives the state. What’s worse is that so many average people who don’t follow the news will probably believe him.

Hell, I wouldn’t be surprised if right wing loons come up with some kind of story that Biden was the one who didn’t want to meet in person. They always have to spin their stories and distort the truth.

People have to realize that all corporate news media is mostly anti-Democrat. Some of them are blatant, like Fox. The rest fall under the news media theme for the last few decades:

They give right wing Republicans one free-pass after another, while holding Democrats to impossibly high standards.

Next time there is a story in a regular non-Fox newspaper or TV news program that is critical of Biden, spin it around and think back if that same news station was just as critical of Trump or Bush Jr. They allow Republicans to get away with almost anything, and then when a Democrat does anything out if the ordinary or that could possibly cause a controversy, they leap on the story.

It’s kind of a nothing. I’m glad Biden visited a red state after yet another disaster and is doing what a president should. He even met Senator Skeletor (Rick Scott). DeSantis not meeting him is an act of political cowardice, and after the last time Biden outshone him in his own state it’s also clear thinking. My governor can’t afford too many more Ls.

Reminder that Rick Scott’s insurance company was responsible for one of the biggest Medicare frauds in history under his leadership.

      Wikipedia:

During his tenure as chief executive, the company defrauded Medicare, Medicaid, and other federal programs. The Department of Justice won 14 felony convictions against the company, which was fined $1.7 billion in what was at the time the largest healthcare fraud settlement in U.S. history.[7][8]

He also didn’t let his administration use the phrase climate change - in a state with 1350 miles of coastline : https://www.npr.org/2015/03/10/392142452/florida-gov-scott-denies-banning-phrase-climate-change

He was voted in as senator replacing bill Nelson, an environmentalist, mission specialist on a shuttle mission to space, and all around good reasonable guy.

Fuck Rick scott and fuck Florida.

This is the best summary I could come up with:

Biden had told CNN earlier Friday that “yes,” he did plan to meet with the Florida governor while surveying damage from Hurricane Idalia in the state over the weekend.

Biden and DeSantis had largely worked in harmony multiple times in the last couple years to respond to the condo collapse in Surfside in 2021 and Hurricane Ian in 2022.

Presidential trips to disaster zones are usually tightly coordinated with local and state leaders so as to not interrupt the response and recovery, making the contretemps between the White House and governor’s mansion all the more notable.

On Thursday, Biden’s homeland security adviser Liz Sherwood-Randall told reporters during a White House press briefing that the trip was still being planned, but that “every time I’ve been to Florida with the president, he has met – of course – with Gov.

In a statement Friday, White House spokesperson Emilie Simons told CNN Biden’s visit was being planned to disrupt the recovery efforts from the storm as little as possible.

DeSantis told reporters earlier in the day that he had spoke with Biden over the phone and raised concerns about pulling resources away from the recovery efforts to provide security for the visit, especially since it will take place in a part of the state where access was already limited before Idalia arrived.
