Right, so it’s not literally America. United States of America is the country, while just the word America represents all the countries in the Americas
There’s also the Republic of Ireland, the Republic of Korea, the Islamic Republic of Iran, the United Republic of Tanzania, the People’s Republic of China, the State of Kuwait, the Kingdom of Belgium, the Republic of Latvia, the Principality of Monaco, the Kingdom of Spain, the Kingdom of Sweden, the Commonwealth of Australia, the Republic of Peru, the Republic of Paraguay, the Republic of Ecuador and a whole ton of other countries who are called by the last word in their official names because that is HOW ENGLISH WORKS.
And if you really gave a damn about all the people in Latin America, you’d call them by the proper names of their countries.
But if you insist I’m wrong, go over to lemmy.ca and post a thread telling them they’re American. See what they think.

Every Canadian I’ve ever met doesn’t like to be called American. Don’t know about the other countries, but I’d assume it’s the same.
They prefer North American in my experience, if not simply Canadian.
Wait, when David Bowie sang “I’m Afraid of Americans,” was he singing about us Canadians too?? This never even occurred to me as a possibility.

I think some just dislike that one country claims the demonym of two whole continents.

Don’t get me wrong, “american” now caries connotations I want nothing to do with.
I have a solution.
We rename the continents.
If everyone on two continents is an American, then how are people from the one country literally called America supposed to differentiate themselves?
USAers or United Statesians
You can’t use the second because the official name for Mexico is United Mexican States.

in german they are often called US-Americans, though Americans is usually understood aswell.
Am I wrong in saying it’s not literally called America? I thought it was called United States

I’m quite happy not placing myself in the same American bucket, not sure why anyone would say that.

I’m pretty sure those crusaders are not from the Americas.
