I wrote a huge thing about period pain and PCOS but having second thoughts because I’m not too sure if it’s appropriate? I did spoiler it and warn for those who don’t want to see it. But yeah. I’ve got no where else to talk about it and it’s just like a lot of ??? and ughhhh pain.

If it’s cool then I’ll reply to this, if not well, I won’t… I guess?

If it helps you feel better, chuck it out and defs use the spoiler tag so people can avoid if they need! But if you need to vent, goooo!!

I have major body dismorphia due to not having female reproductive organs, but I can deal or scroll past. You should be able to talk about what you are going through.

Everyone is being super nice so I shall post it. Spoiler omg for obvious reasons. So if that periods and PCOS is gross or triggering, you’ve been warned.

      gross stuff here!

So I’ve been diagnosed with PCOS since I was 12 but only officially when I was 21 due to the procedure being pretty invasive for a 12 y/o. I didn’t have a lot of periods growing up and only had one pretty regularly when I got on the pill at 18 and I got off it at 23 due to my past GP’s concern with blood clots. Thus since then I’ve had the rod.

Anyways, since being on the rod my periods were non-existent except for that I would bleed old blood. That’s been pretty consistent, I would never get a period in the typical sense. It’d be maybe once every 2 months or so and it’s just old blood.

Now it’s a mixture of old blood and new blood and I am in so much pain (well like on a scale it’s like a 4 to 5. Hurts but I try to focus on work). And I’m just like ??? so many question marks. Like wtf body, I thought we had a deal, you didn’t give me periods and I would be okay with that.

There’s not much to this really. I just like I’m so confused and in pain and I want to die. Ugh… Ugh. Sorry that this is very TMI, as I said, I don’t know who else to talk to about this. It’s not triggering the gender dysphoria, but it’s still not great. Thank you to whoever listens.

Shit, afab people’s health has been pushed to the back for far too fucking long hasn’t it? For christ’s sake people know what they want for their bodies.

That’s pretty creepy. I’m sorry you’ve had to put your health on the back burner. I’m pretty sure the centre clinic in st kilda has a female gp and they’re a specialist queer clinic.

My GP there is male, but I’ve always felt completely safe and understood by him. He only works wednesdays though. I think he’s the only one there who has the training and capacity to understand hormone treatment but I could be wrong.

Not too sure what went wrong in the drawing board when it came to human periods… haha.

Yeah I think I might do what I need to do around the house and then heat up the wheat bag and continue reading the comic I was reading at work (look, it was super slow and I wasn’t getting emails).

Fuck, you’re strong to work through that! Have seen a health pro?

I’m just so glad its not pushing your dysphoria as well. I’m trans femme so I understand dysphoria and know it comes out of nowhere sometimes and can last for hours. For what it’s worth I obviously read your post without being triggered and this is pretty good for me honestly.

I’m going to need to see a GP to get the rod replaced soon anyway. But yeah, like it’s just, ugh. I never had any sort of dysphoria around my period because I don’t get it often. Compared to a trans man/masc person who might get dysphoria due to having it often. But when I would get it it’s never been the downfall of society as I know it.

Also I’m super happy you felt comfortable enough to read it <3 I tried to not make it so… weird but yeah. I understands periods are a thing some people just don’t want to hear. That’s valid.

Most of my close people are cis women and now I have a noticable cycle I seem to be coming to terms with being able to talk about it all a bit more. My worst dysphoria was post egg crack, pre-hrt and in the early stages when i had no t and not enough e. That time has passed. To be really female and connect as deeply as I want to with afab women I have to be open the knowledge and not be too selfish and or squeamish to back away from certain topics.

Edit, enough about me, I hope you feel better soon.

We’ve just had the baby sleep consultant come by. I didn’t have high hopes, in my mind it was just a starting point as it’s the free council service and the advice we got from our maternal child health nurse did not work for us at all.

But I have been pleasantly surprised! She was really nice and the approach she has suggested sounds a lot more suitable for us. It’s going to be a hard 3+ week journey to change baby’s sleep habits. Really hoping at the end of it we will see some better sleep!! I am so tired!!

Getting close to needing something like this ourselves. He ONLY wants to sleep on mum, and whilst he usually stays down once he finally goes down at 11-12ish its a long time to get him there. What were some things they suggested out of curiosity?

Mine was just like that too! He got a tiny bit more independent as he got older but nowhere near enough. How old is yours now? If it’s not much better by 4-5 months I’d definitely recommend it. It will be a bit harder for us as he’s older and the sleep habits are more set in stone. So the earlier the better!

We are transitioning to cot in his own room so it was suggested we basically work in 15 min increments. Put him down when he first starts showing tired signs (before he’s melting down and grumpy) and give him a chance to fall asleep on his own. If he fusses can try adding one thing at a time, like shushing or song, then patting the mattress, then patting him etc. If that doesn’t work, all good, just go back to what works and try again at the next sleep.

Also having a rock solid routine before sleep and keeping the sleep conditions exactly the same: so always have white noise, always do bed time routine in the same order etc. And consistency. So even if it doesn’t seem like it’s working, sticking with it for every single sleep. “Success” at the beginning may just be laying there without crying for a few mins.

@TinyBreak @stardustingss agree, it’s way too early for routine.

Have you tried swaddling? My daughter was great in a swaddle up until about 4 months when she started rolling and had to change everything. I found a great swaddling technique on YouTube that was inescapable and she settled down real well with that (she was a bit of a Houdini even quite early).

Yeah that young I think you basically have to roll with it. Their bed times do eventually shift earlier! Basically you want to get on the other side of the 4 month regression then see what you’re dealing with.

Mine had a phase of not going to sleep until 1am for a while then randomly just switched to 9-10pm. Then gradually kept moving back and now he goes to bed at 7.30!

The sleep hour numbers can drive you crazy. Like a few months ago we were told he wasn’t getting enough day sleep so I worked super hard to increase it. Now he sleeps too much 🙃

It weirds me out every time I go get a haircut and try to explain what I want. I sound so…vague and painterly. I need a language scalpel or a sniper bullet chambered in the correct dialect.

The trick is to write down what you say when it works and recite that back the next time you go.

That is unless you have been saying the same thing and they don’t understand.

Then as you say the photo is the next best thing!

Good news for those who aren’t using Reddit anymore: this DT has almost twice as many comments as the one on Reddit. Thats good for us, since I and a few others were expecting a lot of people to zoom on back to Reddit the moment the sub reopened

One interesting thing I noted from a quick flick through, there seems to be a lot less replies to comments, but a similar amount or maybe even more upvotes than usual. Makes sense since the sub has about 600k members, and like 95% lurk (what’s that effect called again? The 90-9-1 rule I think?)

It probably won’t last though, I don’t think we’ll lose many people just put of losing interest at this point, but since Reddit is by far the larger platform and r/Melbourne the larger community, it’s just kinda basic maths that eventually more people will go to the larger community on the larger platform and start engaging there. But at least we have cemented ourselves as a solid alternative Melbourne community off Reddit!

RIP our espresso machine; 16 years of great service, but the water tank thingy is manky as fuck and it can’t be cleaned beyond what we’ve already tried. It’s like the lining has melted, and that can’t be good for consuming, but the replacement tanks have been discontinued. New machine arrives tomorrow and it’s got a built-in grinder, so we need give away the old grinder which works perfectly. Sunbeam Cafe Series, if anyone’s interested.

Much weirdness in the way Lemmy displays posts. I have just worked out that I am seeing deleted comments, and there is just a tiny little symbol at the end of the post to show me it has been deleted (I am guessing it is a mod thing). So apologies to anyone if I have extra-deleted or replied to anything that you have actually removed!

      Happy EOFY!

I was a bit excited for the new financial year, as I have been working hard to get all my finances sorted out. I have my budget working well (with a pretty colourful spreadsheet, including lots of automatic calculations), have no more debts to pay off, future spending goals (including getting another dog or two and further study) are fully costed and achievable.

This financial year change is pretty much ruling off the past messes I have had to clean up, and marks the turning point into a much healthier financial future. A very happy EOFY!🎉
