For my playthrough I chose

Neon Street Rat

It was nice to feel like I had a history somewhere. It doesn’t come up a lot, but when it does it feels satisfying. Especially when questing on Neon. You feel street smart.

Wanted

Kind of mid on this one. I didn’t run into a lot of space combat in my playthrough, so having these guys show up here and there was nice. The bit of story you get is ok but I wish there was more.

Parents

Absolutely fantastic, and it is going to be hard to skip on future playthroughs. Its a bit of a bummer they miss your wedding, but between all the free stuff and the unexpecting places you run into them it is 100% worth it.

I took extrovert because i quite liked most of the fallout 4 companions. I even started making builds around companions. But i have to say starfield really is a step back on that. They all talk in such a monotone manner, there is hardly any personality in there. The one with the most personality is the adoring fan, and his whole joke is that he has no personality. So yeah… don’t take extrovert i guess…

i love neon street rat, the options for it are so so useful in certain neon missions

i think kid stuff is the best trait, i was howling with laughter at the places my parents popped up, though i wish i could tell them more about my journeys

dream home i havent really done anything with yet, but my gf loves it because she loves decorating

I picked Spacer, which was a complete mistake.

There isn’t near as much content taking place in space, most of the action is happening planet side. And for the content that is in space, you don’t need the additional O2 because you’re usually working your way through tight corridors, potentially with a shotgun. Meanwhile when you are on a planet you are often traveling large distances across empty landscapes, a situation where you could really use the additional O2 to speed things up.

Anyway, Spacer is terrible and I think Terra Firma is a much better option.

Empath and Introvert. As long as you’re not intentionally butting heads with your companions, Empath was surprisingly easy to keep rolling.

I barely saw these two in dialogues.

Kids stuff - Your parents are delightful and supportive. I think my favorite interaction was them randomly showing up at the lodge to visit.

Wanted - has only come up a few times so far but adds some interesting content.

According fan - delightfully annoying. Creeped me out one to many times though and now lives at a base.

I went with Parents, Adoring Fan and Dream Home. By Vectera, By Vectera, By Vectera I’d recommend the first two - I found Dream Home underwhelming since the mortgage payoff isn’t a particularly interesting plot line. I think one of the background traits would be better for the third, especially a hometown trait (and neon, it turns out, is the highlight of the game in its current state).

Wanted: It’s OK. I was expecting more ground attacks rather than ship encounters and it can be a bit challenging at first, but you can generally jump out when first hailed, so it’s not too bad. Later it’s a useful source of combat opponents.

Alien DNA: I like the buffs and I’ve never noticed the healing penalty. I suppose I did have trouble keeping a supply of medpacks at the start, but that’s not been an issue for a while. Would take again.

Serpent’s Embrace: little surprised to see if paint me as an active worshiper rather than someone merely raised in the religion. That said, it’s not a big deal, and the buff is nice so long as you’re on the move a lot.

    In another character:

Empath: All very well if you take care to suck up to Constellation. It gets to be a pain if you do something they don’t like, or if you’re not sufficiently goody-goody for their strict morality. Took for RP reasons, probably would not take again.

Extrovert: Well, I do tend to travel with a follower in this game, but Constellation are annoying. I’m seriously considering Introvert if I do another character.

Dream Home: Rubbish. You don’t pay a mortgage so much as rent by the week. There’s no financial pressure and while the house is nice, it’s easier to use the Lodge or my ship. Would not take again.

I was also very disappointed with the followers in the game after taking extrovert. They seem so flat compared to fallout 4.

Yeah. I wasn’t a huge fan of Fallout 4, but they really knocked it out of the park with the companions. I’d happily take Nick for Deacon or Curie, hell or even Perston along on my adventures, and I’m not really a “follower” sort of player.

Constellation though, there’s no one there who I think “I want this person to tag along”.

    Kid stuff - yes

    Mansion - maybe

adoring fan - season to taste. Hard to say this one is worth the trait burn. Maybe I need to have him follow me around more?

None: it seems to me like these are more fun in a second playthrough, when I know how the game feels while playing without. Then I know what I am missing, and can choose traits accordingly.

I also took Parents for my first playthrough - and I totally agree with you! It’s going to be tough to ever skip that trait in the future… and I’m hopping modders will add even more for them to do!

Alien dna- the boost to O2 Is amazing.

    Wanted because free ships.

    UC/Freestar faction for conversation

Started with BH because… with it you get your first free ship when you try to leave vectera…. If you know what I mean :)

Bounty hunter- it comes with pilot, targeting systems and boost packs.

All three are great to get early. Other early skills are security, weightlifting and the oxygen one, mostly because the unlocks are annoying to get

        At least, for me.

          Bounty hunter

I wish I’d gone with this. It’s the playstyle I landed on without intending to do so.

Eh. Skills are really only about how you start and maybe RP if that’s something thst internests you.

The traits are far more important.

I’m thinking that Alien DNA + Terra Firma is basically a giant free O2 boost that more than makes up for any of the downsides.

Dream home - sucks, easy to pay off and not worth it

Wanted - meh there are enough ship battles as is.

3rd one I don’t even remember so I’m really kicking myself especially if I can’t repick these on ng+

street rat, which has come in handy a few times

introvert: seen it come up once in dialogue, doesn’t seem to matter much

can’t remember the 3rd but I assume it’s as impactful as the others.

I also must have chosen some skills in economics and medicine as I see that come up in dialogue a lot
