“A lot of the outcry from indie devs was kind of misplaced really. None of them are going to get anywhere near the $1m anyway.”
Then they still don’t understand why people were mad.
The problem was that it was retroactive, and while this specific change may not impact many of the indie devs (I think it does, but that’s irrelevant), the precedent of changing the terms after the fact is unacceptable. That is why people were mad.
But honestly, they shouldn’t have gone this route at all. Their main distinguishing feature that separates them from Unreal Engine (at least in terms of licensing costs) is that they charge per seat instead of royalties per sale. If they’re struggling to fund development, they should increase the cost per seat, and encourage people to update with nifty new features. Throwing in a retroactive royalty-esque charge is a really effective way to piss off your customers.
Devs really need to put their money where their mouth is.
Back after nvidias controversy a year ago or so, Reddit was filled with “boycott nvidia!” Posts, promises not to buy nvidia gpus, etc. then about 3 months later Reddit was filled with “Just got my RTX 4090 TI :)” posts.
If you actually want things to change, you need to change them.
Boycotts are worthless if you immediately 180 as soon as the controversy passes.
In that example it’s probably not the same people boycotting as boasting. It’s probably not even the same people upvoting, though I imagine there are some users who just upvote everything. The only similarity is that they’re posted in the same place which gives the impression of some goldfish-memory hive-mind with no principles, whereas really it’s just that different people think different things.
The same community the paraded the boycott turned around and upvoted people buying nvidia. Even if the same people who were pro-boycott weren’t the ones posting their purchases, the community as a whole acted with a goldfish hivemind.
The “No one else is going to sacrifice, why should I?” mentality is precisely what enables this enshittification.
You’re missing the point, it’s not one unified community, it’s lots of people with differing opinions about a common interest. I doubt either of us can be bothered to sift through hundreds of users post history but I doubt anyone calling for boycotts also posted their new GPUs.
No it isn’t a unified community. But how can the upvote ratio of 5:2 for Nvidia boycott also make sense in the same community a few months later where “I just bought an RTX 4090 TI” is around 7:2.
No, everyone isn’t an actual hivemind, but the likelyhood that every single person who updooted “New RTX card :)” posts didn’t updoot “Boycott nuhvideo :(” posts is ludicrous.
The community as a whole didnt act at all, 2 completely different sections of the community acted in directly opposing manners within 3 months of each other.
The boycott posts are filled with “who cares” comments, and the bragging posts are filled with “bad purchase” comments.
No as a whole they didn’t, but there is NO WAY every single person who upvoted “Boycott Nvidia” posts didn’t upvote “I just bought an RTX card” posts.
Sure yeah, some people may not have flipflopped. But given how many upvotes both types of posts got months apart in the same community, the more likely explanation is a community of weak willed people who gave in to FOMO, decided to memory hole their boycott.
So, youre just blindly making up guesses because they fit your already preset opinion of that community?
In that case, Im pretty sure you made all of those boycott posts, as well as the new purchase ones. You just made a bunch of accounts for each, and then paid a botting service to upvote them.
Sure, maybe some of the posts or votes were genuine. But the majority were just your sockpuppets.
Unity used “Fee Increase”… It hurt itself it’s confusion!
