It’s not old at all, it won an art competition a few years ago.
Also not an engraving, nor is it Japanese. It’s from 2007, by Galina Zhiganova, a Russian artist.
Wait, you can lie on the internet?
If I answer yes will you believe me
If I said yes, would you believe me?
If I answer yes will you believe me
And what would the other guard say?
Yes!
No, that would be wrong to do.
Also not the hem, it’s the sleeve.
Also not a woman o.0
Not doubting you, but do you have a source? Sounds like a good read.
it seems like this is the artist’s portfolio (didn’t find another one): http://www.free-lancers.net/users/OriginalArt/projects/46267/

Awesome! Thank you!
It’s an ancient concept, depicted several times over history. The oldest one is an old Chinese tale (and related paintings) that has an emperor cutting his sleeve to avoid disturbing his sleeping lover (a younger man). So famous that “cut sleeve passion” became euphemism for homosexuality in China.
In Islam, there is an apocryphal story of the prophet Muhammad doing this for his cat Muezza.
I was hoping it would be a picture, not a story :(
That would imply having to draw the prophet Muhammad.
The prophet Mohammed has been drawn many times. It’s a shame that very often the head of Muhammed has been scratched off of the paintings. People still honored the artwork but thought depicting the prophet was a mistake. Persian miniature art is a beautiful world to dive into if art has your interest. Kamāl ud-Dīn Behzād would be a nice starting point.

This has to be a reference, yeah?
I would say that if this is actually old then it might be one of the oldest memes
