It really is a joke. I remember a decade ago talking about how pirated movies were a better user experience than buying a DVD because they were making you sit through ads on the paid product before you could view it, but the pirated product just let you get to what you were watching immediately.

The whole experience is completely backward!

In the end I was finally so PO’d with my Blu Ray needing to update copyright protections and download the latest trailers before doing anything I switch to having a PC connected to my TV instead and threw out the Blu-ray.

I just wanted to sit down for a movie or dinner without screwing around or finishing my meal long before the movie even starts.

With streaming services that came later it was much easier to do that again. However with the cable-ification of the streaming services that PC on my TV is looking pretty good again…

YouTube videos aren’t paid products (and if you do pay there are supposedly no ads), so it’s not the same thing. But regardless, the frequency of the ads is insufferable!

The paid service will start without ads, and then they’ll put them in just at the beginning and end for a video, then they’ll ad them in like they are now and blame rising operational costs.

The playbook has been out in the open for a while now.

We have an entire generation now that grew up seeing this happen everywhere. Its so blindingly obvious this is “just the way internet stuff works”

It was also the way that cable TV “worked”. Didn’t stop people from cutting the cord to get away. Didn’t stop the rise of the Ad-Blocker.

it even happens with paid Amazon prime now. I just started a movie, got an ad. Stopped it and restarted it, got the same ad.

Big tech is making SNAFU a reality for streaming.

Pirating things on an iPad is one of the worst ways to do it, I hate the workaround we have with Stremio…

I’d like the Jailbreak scene to make a great comeback, so it can help with all these annoyances… Or Apple widely supports sideloading at least.

I love my iPad for many reasons - especially with Apple Pencil and procreate - but yeah it sucks for pirating. I didn’t realise how used to shutting down 6 new pop up windows every time I touched the screen I had become until my mum got one and I tried to teach her how to use pirate sites. After she called me in a panic about “the cartoon pornography I’d infected her iPad with” I gave up and signed up for an IPTV for us to share instead. It’s got a really decent vod library that’s updated regularly so it will do the trick for now.

I installed the newer version of revanced on my SO’s phone and after a while it started just like… stopping videos out of nowhere. By that point I forgot how to reinstall it, and didnt feel like relearning all that, so unfortunately it’s back to ad city :/

In my experience libretube with default instances is bad, I couldn’t even watch a single video without buffering every 3 minutes for a minute.

With a selfhosted instance however, libretube is perfect

Thankfully YouTube outs itself with the “most replayed” graph in the video timeline.

You can just skip right to the peak which is always right after the sponsor bit.

yeah but sponsorblock can identify more: intros, filler content, self promotion, non music parts of a music video… also has a highlight indicator which skips to the most relevant part.

these are crowdsourced so not 100% but still pretty good

Adblockers time is coming to an end sadly. If it isn’t this round, eventually someone is going to make it impossible to use the Internet with an adblocker.

Money owns the internet and money wants more money.

After working in IT support for years I can assure you that is probably very common. One fat guy named Mel had the dirtiest keyboard I’ve ever seen and it was absolutely repulsive. Glad I don’t deal with those disgusting slobs anymore.

Gatekeeping where someone can use thier laptop in their own home seems wack. Although, I’d advise to not use it in the shower.

…why would I watch YouTube for entertainment though? Probably an episode of Doctor Who to catch up before the 23rd. Also, I own a television.

It’s still baffles me that people still say that YouTube has been around for decades now. There is all sorts of interesting content creators. It is an old family guy reruns.

If you think YouTube is boring that’s on you for not finding interesting content, and watching crap instead which means that the algorithm just offers you more crap.

Find what you’re interested in and watch it and then the algorithm will start recommending other stuff along the same lines maybe subscribe to a few channels I think I’m literally subscribed to hundreds of channels. I barely ever watched stuff the algorithm suggests any more because I found pretty much a constant stream of good quality content creators.

Far more interesting youtube creators than almost everything on television, esp. after the writer strike. Less commercials, skip capability, que capability. Television has been obsolete for many of us for over a decade. I honestly don’t understand why anyone still pays for cable unless they are over 70.

Personally I prefer documentaries, educational content and investigative journalism. YouTube excels for these genres, especially since PBS is primarily using YouTube these days.

    what are you watching first?

Extremely presumptuous that it will be a video on your platform, YouTube.
