  • I definitely agree with you on 1, 3 and 4. Personally I haven’t even looked at Starfield because of the patient gamer thing, I’ll try it out in a few years or whenever it’s on sale / has enough buzz.

I do kind of defend a lot of dlc though. Some of it is predatory as fuck, but some of it just massively expands a game’s lifespan and you end up with massively more support/content in a post-dlc world than we ever got without it.

It just depends on if they’re selling Horse Armor, or if it’s a game that keeps getting major content patches for 10 years because it’s being supported by dlc. Both happen. Of course, given that “horse armor” is literally something Bethesda did…well…

  • Regarding the availability, I only know of those produced by either GraphicAudio (paid) and BBC (paid). Please feel free to list other sources. (…) I don’t think podcasts would fit in this category hence not recommending those.

There are a lot of audio dramas that are distributed as podcasts. They’re not podcasts, but they use the same delivery mechanism/apps as podcasts for distribution. At least two BBC series that I know of are distributed this way for free - The Lovecraft Investigations and Tumanbay.

So if you haven’t heard of any free ones, that’s probably why.

Normally I’d recommend /r/audiodrama on reddit for a list of recommendations, but they’re participating in the blackout and the aforementioned kbin magazine with 3 posts is where they moved to. I could just provide a list of series if you like, though. Because they use podcast distribution systems there isn’t really a single source, it’s just a matter of looking up specific, individual shows.

  • Thanks for making this! Good idea.

Quick question: what’s your stance on audio dramas? I feel weird talking about them here since they’re not books, but yet listening to one is almost indistinguishable from listening to an audiobook. The only difference is they tend to have much higher production value, are usually free, and the text is generally geared more towards an audio-only experience with less narration and more sound direction.

Do you think this sub has space for both things, or should I not spam? So far no one has really made an audio fiction lemmy. There’s one on kbin, but it’s harder to access and has like three posts…

  • Back when I was young, most games cost around $50. But back then they were 1/100th the size and complexity they are now, had absolutely no post-launch support whatsoever, and and even “AAA” titles used pixel art. They didn’t even have voice acting.

If I adjust for inflation alone, no other factors, a $50 game from back then would be $91 today.

I’m not happy about the price increase, but I certainly understand it and can’t really blame anyone for it. Frankly, I’m surprised this didn’t happen many years ago.

Personally, I’ve been a patient gamer for a while - welcome! It’s great here.

  • I’m having a heck of a fun time not just trying to find places I’m interested in, but figuring out the best lemmy instances for them. Because xyz on one server isn’t the same as xyz on another server, even though we can access both of them from any server we want.

I’m also a bit sus of lemmy.ml, which is sad since it seems to have the most activity overall so far. We’ll see how it goes.

    But yes, where sub indeed.

  • Bethesda really has no incentive to actually make TES6 so long as they have healthy subscribers for TES Online

Why would that be the case? ESO is neither made nor published by Bethesda, so it’s weird that they would refuse to make a game because of what another company is doing.

Zenimax is Bethesda’s parent company, sure, but it’s still another company.

Although for the record, ESO is still a pretty good single player experience. It’s not moddable which sucks, but the game generally lets you do 99% of its content solo without ever needing to interact with another player for any reason. Which is cool, since it’s mind bogglingly huge and the quests are generally interesting. If TES6 turns out to be even 1/10th the size of ESO, I’ll be pleasantly very surprised.
