@[email protected] ok so from what I’m seeing, Matrix has incredible integrations (bridges) with Slack, Discord, Whatsapp, Telegram, Signal, etc… so you may be able to communicate with your friends using these bridges https://matrix.org/ecosystem/bridges/ (disclaimer: it’s my day 2 on Matrix and I’m not sure yet how to make a bridge work)

Most people I talk to are resigned and say “there’s nothing we can do, they’re the standard, everybody uses them.” I find that to be a weak argument and I’m ready to give all my support to healthy alternatives

I’m doing this to get more friends on here. 99.9% of my real life close friends and family members only use social apps by Big Tech.

And I have a vested interest in having the Fediverse succeed because in a decade’s time my little one will be a teenager. It would be upsetting to see her use toxic platforms by Big Tech. Her worth shouldn’t be associated to the number of followers she has or likes she gets. I’d want her to use healthier social media…

@[email protected] yes and it makes ZERO sense to me. They would own all their content and followers and wouldn’t have to wrestle with opaque algorithms to get their content seen

@[email protected] yeah I keep Threads and Instagram on a separate phone (an old iPhone SE) that has a different Apple ID, washi tape over the cameras, a dongle to physically block microphone access, an empty address book and empty camera roll. I don’t trust them one bit!

And I rarely post on those apps anyways… just to Threads to tell people to migrate to the (real) Fediverse 🤗

@[email protected] my “secret” has been adding my Pixelfed and Friendica accounts to mobile apps like Ivory and Mona that I use every day. They work super well! I wrote about it for the latest issue of my series The Future is Federated: https://blog.elenarossini.com/fediverse-summer-3-lessons/ BTW the same applies to Android phones, I use Mastodon apps to read my Pixelfed and Friendica feeds 🤗
