What I want to know is it illegal if you travel to another country and break a law that would be illegal in your country but isn’t a law where you’re traveling.

In Canada legal drinking age is 19 in the states its 21. So is it illegal if a 19 year old american is drinking in Canada.

No, you only need to abide by the laws of your locality. Just line within your own country in different states or counties. I can’t buy alcohol on Sunday morning in my town, but I can if I drive to the next town over.

OK but let’s say its a horrible crime like murder. Let’s say elon musk creates a dumb fucking nation in the middle of the sea. Imagine he builds a floating poonton with a flag and a dell computer in the corner dangerously close to the edge and declares murder is legal. So some guy drives their tesla out there, murders a bunch of other idiots and drives back. Is the country just letting them back in?

Though especially in states with abortion bans, people are working to challenge this.

I saw warnings in Singapore that it was illegal for their citizens to do drugs, even when in a foreign country. I’m not sure if/how they actually enforce that though

Failing a drug test gets you prison time and they randomly drug test people in airports.

Many years ago, I seem to remember that failing a drug test in South Dakota could get you 180 days in prison but that no longer seems to be the case and I can’t find a source saying if that really was on the books or not. Some states still do criminalize cheating on drug tests though.
