As seen in the linked thread, a two-week old comment is visible via the direct link but is no longer listed under the post itself.

(I believe there’s also a deleted reply to the comment, but I expect that behavior will be addressed via upgrade.)

Left a response in the linked thread, but am copying it here, too:

From my view the original comment has been replaced with “deleted by creator”. If a user deletes a comment in Lemmy 0.18.5 then it and all its child comments are removed from public view. Though @[email protected] will still see their own comment in the comment history section of their user profile. I think that this behavior will change when we upgrade to 0.19x, and non-admin users will see “deleted by creator” as well.

There appears to be something else going on, too. If you view the post from lemmy.ca or literature.cafe (both of which are on Lemmy 0.19.1) the original comment is still there. It’s like those instances never got the memo that the comment was deleted. I can only assume this is related to the ongoing federation issues in Lemmy 0.19.x?

The only comment I deleted was the one hanging off of https://sh.itjust.works/comment/6657926 (which was basically me pointing out the same thing I later commented elsewhere about, the comment not showing up). Which makes sense, because it doesn’t show up.

If I had deleted https://sh.itjust.works/comment/6657926 itself, you should not be able to see it. But you can, and anyone can. What they can’t do is see it from the thread discussion itself, https://sh.itjust.works/post/11079972 .

And no, the comment I actually did delete does not show in my history … because I deleted it.

It may simply be a data inconsistency issue from one of the times sh.itjust.works went kaput, although it’s weird that a comment that previously showed up under a thread, got upvoted on it, and is still under said thread stops showing up as part of it to readers of the thread. It reminds me of shadowbans.

Data inconsistency sounds right. Here are notifications I’m just receiving for 5-day old replies.

Was seeing comments/posts out of chronological order on a user’s profile yesterday as well.

Here’s a screenshot of my view of the post to illustrate what I was trying to describe. The user you were replying to deleted their comment, which results in the whole comment tree becoming hidden.

I agree there’s some other weird stuff going on, too. This morning I received a user report that was days old. I’ll let TheDude know.

Ah, that makes sense, thanks for your time and the investigative work. I guess I’m used to the way reddit handles it, which is that you can still open up branches where some of the parent comments have been deleted, and I didn’t remember I had replied to a comment under.
