Because they kept using sets and props from other shows and movies to save money. Not even altering them sometimes.
They used downtown Mayberry from The Andy Griffith Show at least twice. You can see the names of the shops in some of the shots.
I find this iconic Garak smile as needlessly explicitly sexual. I’m not into guys mostly, but I can’t pretend that it’s not a free pass for whatever he wants with me. I’m surprised there’s no war started over him in the series. That cardassian dude is a crush. I’d not accept arguments against that.
Yeah, that’s because Andrew Robinson intentionally played him gay for Bashir after explicitly being told not to.

Yeah, pretty welcoming community even for total non fans. That’s been most trek related places in my experience. There’s always jerks in any population, but even the trekker jerks are less jerky, if that makes sense.
It always makes me giggle when I run across people in Klingon dress and makeup, and they’re the most helpful, friendly people. I’ve run across those folks at renaissance festivals, comic cons, and at gas stations.
That sense of open arms is really strong here in particular :)
