UNITED NATIONS, June 10 (Reuters) - The United Nations Security Council on Monday backed a proposal outlined by President Joe Biden for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip and urged the Palestinian militants to accept the deal aimed at ending the eight-month-long war.

Hamas welcomed the adoption of the U.S.-drafted resolution and said in a statement that it is ready to cooperate with mediators over implementing the principles of the plan.

Russia abstained from the U.N. vote, while the remaining 14 Security Council members voted in favor of the resolution supporting a three-phase ceasefire plan laid out by Biden on May 31 that he described as an Israeli initiative.

I remain pessimistic on the course this genocide is taking, but a UN resolution for peace that both the US and China voted for…

I didn’t expect to see this happen any time soon.

It’s a good showing of where the international stage is but don’t get your hopes up too much. There was a 2 week ceasefire UN resolution that passed in march which israel completely ignored and Biden just covered for Netanyahu by lying that UNSC resolutions were ‘not binding’ (they are).

UNSC resolutions are exactly as binding as the force level they’re willing to commit to enforce them.

Israel probably is only accepting it due to pressure from the U.S government. It itself is trying to distance itself away from being active in the agreement though.

Israel agrees to the ceasefire as long as Hamas does not agree to the ceasefire.

They have, but it’s largely meaningless because nothing really happens unless hamas releases all the hostages.
