I know some things about both, but im still confused for some reason. Like what is the difference between peertube and youtube, which is better?
I was thinking of getting into one of theses for video creation but im not sure which would be better as a sort of hobby? also do i need a powerful pc or a good microphone to get started? is it better to record with or without your voice?

PeerTube is part of the Fediverse so you need to pick an instance and each has a limit on the amount of content you can upload, so if you are prolific this might run out quickly. There are also no ads so you have to.rely on other sources for income (Patreon, affiliate links, etc).
You only need to choose an instance if you want to upload. If you bump an instances limits. Roll your own on a cloud service like akami-linode and then you set your own limits.
Basically peer tube is like a bit torrent instance with a bit of local storage provided by the server operator that is oriented towards streaming. What you upload is what you get. There is no re-encoding or recompression or resizing. Unless you do it yourself. If you try to watch a version with a much higher bit rate than your connection can sustain there will be lots of buffering. But you can absolutely still watch.

You’d need to fish around as they come online all.the time and can close to new members, so it can change a lot.
PeerTube offers self hosting of video. You can host whatever you want and no one can stop you with anything short of extreme state intervention. Video is distributed to viewers via a P2P channel. This means that you don’t need YouTube’s vast network resources to serve a modest number of videos; any super popular video will be distributed mostly by the P2P network rather than your own server.
You don’t necessarily have to self-host. There are publicly accessible PeerTube servers who will host your videos for free. However you won’t necessarily have as much resistance to censorship in that case.
YouTube offers baked-in monetization. For good and ill. If you want to monetize your videos, you will have to figure that out for yourself on PeerTube.

Yeah I think the problem is that I cant find many videos I like. I searched and found a few creators that I watch on youtube but not really enough to get me to keep going back
Yeah, I looked around and unfortunately couldn’t find that much either (except for a few specific niches).
Honestly though, if peertube semi blew up the same way mastodon / lemmy / kbin have I think most of the hosts would shut down in the process. Anything but short videos are hella expensive to store and distribute en masse compared to text + images. Video might be one of the things that can only survive if mostly centralised for now.

From my understanding peertube has less restrictions of content compared with youtube. But I could very well be wrong. I’d say upload content to both. It won’t hurt having 2 types of audience and could potentially bring more views. I know several creators that upload to both.
In my experience everyone has to start somewhere. I started with just a simple headset mic and eventually got a Blue Yeti usb mic. You don’t necessarily need a powerful pc. Programs like OBS, especially if you are just recording, can be optimized for lower end PC’s. I recorded on an old laptop for a while and it worked just fine. Start with what you have and upgrade when you can. Good luck!

I’d be interested in checking peertube content as I’m trying to find alternatives to YouTube, but I can’t find an iOS app for that. Is there one?

Based on the name, perhaps Freetube rather than Piped, but they’re both just youtube frontends.
PeerTube is the Fediverse equivalent to YouTube, so like Lemmy has decentralised instances, PeerTube is the same for video hosting. Of course, you may just have been following the advice to give a wrong answer to annoy others into correcting you.

He said you have to pick an instance and the instance likely has upload limits. Each limit is set by the person/people running the instance. Like Lemmy.world and Lemm.me are two separate Lemmy instances.
Peer tube is literally just Mastodon/Lemmy for videos…
