I am willing to bet that it has significantly more to do with narcissism and a religious-indoctrination-induced mental illness than it does stupidity.

There’s a reason they’ve been attacking education for generations. There’s a reason donnie gassed a bunch of protesters to hold a bible upside down in front of a church. Religion literally teaches you to disregard logic and “just have faith”, from birth. The sooner people understand the real problem the sooner it can be resolved.

It’s why education is so important. It’s also why the rich (a.k.a. the Republican Party) want to gut education. An uneducated population is so much easier to manipulate - why rein in the Supreme Court, the 1%, or the government when minorities are the cause for all of your problems? It’s the same tactic that’s been used and nauseum for literally millennia. It’s tried and true, and only education will stop it. Hell, global education is the reason we are even in such a golden age right now…

                No. @[email protected] said:

why reign in the Supreme Court

This is, based on my understanding of the whole context, an error. And not just a simple typo or harmless mistaken homophone. It actually fundamentally changes the meaning of that phrase. They intended it to say “why put controls on the Supreme Court”. But the words actually used mean “why rule as a member of the Supreme Court”. It took me 3 or 4 rereads of the comment to understand that the hyphen that preceded that phrase was meant to switch to a sarcastic tone about switching blame, rather than asking a question about Republican goals (“why go to the effort of controlling the Supreme Court…if we’re not going to abuse those powers to keep the population dumb”, or something along those lines, is what I was expecting)

So I suggested the correction: “rein in”.

@[email protected] was just…I dunno, making a shitty joke, I guess? It doesn’t add anything to anyone’s conversation.

There is so much lethargy in the German people and so much immorality and above all so much stupidity.

Same reason other groups have been blamed over the years. In Nazi Germany, the Jews were blamed for basically everything - the loss of the war, inequality, etc. MAGA is doing the same thing, but with immigrants.

Why? Blaming someone else for your problems is a lot easier than understanding what’s actually going on and going after that. Amusingly, MAGA leaders are using it as a diversionary tactic as they put policies in place that benefit the wealthiest. Pitting the poor against one another prevents them from seeing what’s actually happening.

Blaming someone else for your problems is a lot easier than understanding what’s actually going on

I would argue it isn’t just a matter of making things “easy”. Migration is a symptom of larger socio-economic and ecological changes.

Drug wars, crack downs on native rights and labor movements, climate-change induced economic collapse, and the wholesale destruction of local communities through industrial development have created a population of tens of millions of displaced people.

Even when you understand “what’s going on” there’s very little you can do about it. But one thing Americans can do and have gotten really good at is building big gated communities to keep poor people out while still exploiting their cheap labor.

The urge to arrest and deport large numbers of migrants is, at its root, the urge to build a more advanced and comprehensive gated community. One that can still exploit the labor of America’s southern neighbors without sharing any of the infrastructure we’ve developed to make life pleasant in the states.

And the urge is deepened as the prior generation’s investment in infrastructure shows visible signs of collapse. With fewer functioning highways, aquifers, generators, and public services, the American impulse is to start expelling the poorest among us in order to horde the balance.

Pitting the poor against one another prevents them from seeing what’s actually happening.

Pitting the middle class against the poor promises to guarantee another generation of relative prosperity. This is a kind of ultimatum issued by the very rich, and not unique to a particular party. You either get on the right side of immigration, or we take away your privileges and expel you, too.

The fight between Dems and Repubs is less about whether we do a mass expulsion (its easy to find homeless roundups in a dozen major blue cities from Houston to NYC to Chicago) and more about who we target for atrocity.

        It’s also a logistical nightmare.

How do you get millions of people out of the country in a timely fashion.

They’d need some place to put all of them for sorting, some kind of camp where they could concentrate the population.

Likely they’d just be sitting around all day, but thanks to the 14th amendment, they can be put to work for free.

And it would take forever to get all these people over the border, and they could just come right back over. They’d need some kind of long term solution, something final to prevent more immigrants from coming over.

Yeah this is gonna be bad.

Spend a few hours on the right-wing news circuit and you’ll discover everything from serial murder to economic downturns to my favorite candidate losing the election to the price of milk is directly related to Illegal Immigrants Breaking The Law. They’re all voting. They’re sneaking into the country to do horrible crimes. They’re destroying everything about this country that’s noble and honest and good. They are dismantling the English language. They dress stupid. They’re doing Michael Bay style action movie heists and car chases. They’re impregnating your daughter right this instant and that’s why she won’t return your phone calls.

And they are all working at the behest of a (((shadowy evil organization))) of far-left communist radicals who have been plotting for the last 500 years to destroy American, end Christianity, and force white people into slavery under the yoke of Chinese Muslim College Leftist Atheist Satanist Pedophiles.

You want to strictly enforce illegal immigration and do mass deportation? Ok, but then we need to jail any business owner who hires undocumented workers. Massive fines and actual jail time.

Let see how Republican business owners feel about that. Dry up the demand for these jobs and the supply will decrease.

Of course I know these fascists will come up with excuses as to why they don’t want that since the benefit from a vulnerable working poor class of workers for them to exploit at farms, construction companies, hospitality jobs, etc.

But I also don’t want to lock up the person employing another one out of goodness. Hiring 1-2 people shouldn’t be the thing to punish.I want the people and the industries who make a habit of using and abusing undocumented labor to deal with a rule like this. Agriculture and meat processing, especially.

Tbh, I don’t think what I suggested was an actually viable solution, I was just pointing out the hypocrisy of the anti-immigration people. They just want a permanent class of vulnerable workers to exploit. If I had no morals and ran a business who exploited these low wage vulnerable workers, having the fear of being deported would certainly “keep them in line”, continue to work in these horrible conditions, and accept my low wages.

Of course none of the “illegal immigrant” discussions from the GOP touch on stemming the business side of things.

I think you’re totally right about the permanent underclass thing. And it has been for a long time. This week I was looking into the history of education migrants’ kids in the US. Our current stance of educating kids came from Texas passing a law in the 70s to strip state funding for schools which chose to enroll the children of undocumented people. (Another case of Texas using its state power to bully people; it’s always fucking Texas). That law was challenged and in 1982 the Supreme Court ruled against it; Judge Brennan wrote an opinion specifically citing the creation of a permanent underclass of illiterate people not fit to contribute to any country. He called it “bad public policy.” It was crazy to see like, reasonable ideas about society come through in a supreme court ruling, that’s a long time past.

I think it could be viable to lock up/fine into oblivion employers hiring migrant labor specifically to be abusive/cheap. But of course a lot of monied interests would be against it. America always seems terrified about scaring corporations off. And it’s so much easier to blame individuals and have them internalize the pain than to deal with the systems which set the situations.

Do they mean to say deport themselves? Isn’t America a land of immigrants essentially at this point?

I bet many of these folks have have Irish ancestors who escaped poverty and the famine. That’s like telling people to go back to their poverty-stricken land. Which is impossible considering that climate-change is only creating economic disasters many developing countries.

I say this and will say it again: there are no such thing as illegal immigrants anymore in the face of climate-change.

This is one of those things you can honestly “both sides”. Trump tries to get votes by instilling fear of immigrants and trans, Dems try to get votes by instilling fear of Trump. Because neither for the most part are willing to present a positive reason to vote for them that would remotely get enough votes to win.

I think fear that if a Republican wins office it will be the end of democracy and we will collapse into a single party totalitarian system is probably unfounded, yes.

I suspect the Democrat party feels the same way behind closed doors, otherwise we wouldn’t have heard their candidate at the time (this was before Biden quit) say “I’ll feel, as long as I gave it my all and I did [as] good a job as I know I can do, that’s what this is about." That’s not a thing you say if you genuinely believe that this election is the last chance to save the country from becoming an authoritarian fascist state.

But really that’s besides the point - the point is that both sides actively engage in trying to terrify their voters into voting for them because neither can present a reason why we should want to vote for them in remotely enough numbers to win otherwise.

Seriously, how does “mass deportation now” poll? Even the magic wand version that just magically knows who has legal documents and who doesn’t without major disruption to those with legal status, that can’t have more than 20%-30% approval right? I don’t understand why this would be something they would make signs about.

Edit: well, I was off, the magic wand version gets 51% which at least makes some sense to have signs. Usually you’d have something more popular as a main signpost of your campaign but I guess it’s not insane.

If any pro-deportation voter were to learn exactly what “mass deportation” entailed and actually looked like, they would not only immediately change stance, but they would also question our current system and how much resources we’re spending on chasing individual humans around the country to move them briefly.

They are WWE wrestlemania fans who chant a slogan, paint their faces and repeat the taglines. They don’t even have the most remote ideas or perspectives on what our national infrastructure and policy enforcement look like.

A mass deportation would be the largest, most expensive project we’ve undertaken as a nation, there would be a sacrifice of rights like we’ve never seen, you would have to hire literally a million more agents and give them the power to crawl through anyone’s personal lives, and the infrastructure alone in moving these people around would be a scale that beats our current mass transportation system by miles. Presuming the same powers that formed such overreaching organizations don’t decide to just Holocaust the whole idea and start shipping dark skinned people by train to special camps outside town, and the worst part is there are soup-brained centrists reading this line and rolling their eyes and thinking “Such a thing could never happen in the modern world” from their safe, sheltered lives they assume will never change.

Who likes all our pretty songs,

And he likes to sing along,

And he likes to shoot his gun,

But he knows not what it means,

        Knows not what it means,

Trump wins and we have camps by the end of 2025. We should expect the executions to start shortly after
