Open-source and unmoderated are 2 very different things.

Lemmy is open source so you got this already.

As for an instance without an admin, there can’t be such a thing. An instance has to be hosted on some server and this server belongs to somebody that has to maintain it.

A community without a mod doesn’t exist, as a community has to be founded by someone to exist.

Now, do you really want a community without an active mod ? Well if you want spam, bots and shitty content, sure.

If your problem is power tripping mods, just leave the communities with such mods.

Or you can run your own Lemmy instance and see how it goes.

“Founded” should be ok. “Policed” constantly is totally annoying. Instead of a mod, it should be an “originator”.

You think they want to deal with the legal fallout of owning the server that hosts kiddy porn and meet ups for hate groups or terrorism? That’s for others, man. They want their cake and eat it too.

        My dude.

        Just don’t.

Everyone else already knows that if there’s only one mod, they own the forum, whether they originated it or not.

You can choose to pretend this fact has not existed since the nineties if you like, but you won’t fool anyone but yourself.

If there’s multiple mods, there’s one that is still top mod, and counts as owning it, regardless of whether or not they use that ability.

If the forum is multi layered, like reddit, lemmy, and similar places, there will be someone that owns the site/service/instance, literally because they own the hardware it is run on. This has also always been the case as long as such layered forums have existed.

What you call “true free speech” is not true free speech, it is speech without consequences, and that does not exist anywhere in the world to any large extent.

The consequences may be minor, but even someone looking at you funny is a consequence of one’s speech

this is a fact that has existed as long as language.

If you go into someone else’s forum and do not follow the rules, assuming rules are available, it is your responsibility to either follow them, or assume that consequences will occur.

If the rules are not available, it’s a shitty forum you should avoid anyway.

Its weird you folks are hyper focused on racism and sexualization of kids when im talking about allowing a fricken picture in a lawncare sub. If only mods wouldnt power trip youd actually have a solid point.

I’m an admin of an instance and the reports I see from our users on “unmoderated” communities haunt me to this day…

I can 100% guarantee you that any community that has zero to no moderation WILL turn into a Nazi and CSAM cestpool.

There is no if, only a when…and that when is answered with “very quickly”

The point is those things would be there pretty much immediately.

Just today I got a report of someone spamming a picture of a woman eating a shit. That user was banned.

Now imagine no one banning those people - everyone would be getting the picture.

You don’t need your own server/instance to start a community. Find an server/instance and start your community. As long as you don’t break instance rules the admins shouldn’t mess with you.

Do it! Run a server! Stake your reputation, and time, on that community with no rules.

Honestly I’m surprised there isn’t one already.

True, but it’s a individual server choice. If the anarchy server figures out balance maybe they could have their own fediverse :)

Recently there was some rich guy who wanted free speech so badly he bought the entire social network, and then he proceeded to unban Nazis and child porn posters, but would ban users who would criticize him, or talk about his business habits.

Forget free speech. That’s a code word for Nazis wanting to be unhinged.

Roll your own? The thing is most of us left Reddit because of decisions from ownership. Administration forcing Reddit apps to pay insanely high fees while not fixing the official Reddit app to be more accessible for blind people and to have the tools needed to moderate communities is why we left…

The people that left because of “micromanaging moderators and admins” left when they closed r/jailbait if you wanna invite those creeps back go ahead and make your own

People have tried the “anarchist forum” approach and it literally never ends well and devolves into chaos. Even 4chan has ground rules and moderators (known as janitors)

I know a lot of people have a knee-jerk reaction to hate them but the platform is really much better with them.

That would still not be what they want. That would just be them being in the role of those admins and/or mods. What they want is impossible.

It’s possible. They write “Without admin or mod interference” so they can just have a community where admins or mods never interfere with anything. Would be horrible, and undoubtedly full of illegal content in no time, but possible.

Well, that depends if “pay for the server”, “update the server”, “go to jail for illegal content on the server and the server is taken as evidence” are counted as “interference”.

You kind of have it right now just go to usenet. Pretty much zero moderation, anybody can say anything, but there’s nobody there to listen. Because it’s too noisy. Heck even the spammers gave up, there was nobody there to spam. It wasn’t even worth spamming anymore

You can always run your own server with your own rules even if that rule is no rules.

The beautiful thing about the fediverse nothing stopping from someone running a server like that. Maybe common sense but nobody else is stopping them.

Its hard to find middle ground btwn keeping spammers out, and the random mods who create silly rules “you cant post questions with vowels” “or you cant post pictures” …in a lawncare sub. Mods are good but they need very limited power.

I see what you’re saying, but ultimately it’s a reputation thing. There will be a moderation team who hits your sweet spot of hands off versus removing annoying content.

From a programmatic perspective designing infrastructure where people can’t remove things leads to the anarchy of usenet.

But I’m hopeful that you will find a group that follows your moderation objectives and you can verify it like looking at the mod log. So it’s going to be all reputation anyway

Usenet is a network communication system developed in the early 1980s. Way older than Lemmy, older than even the world wide web.

I get what you’re staying, but frankly your OP question sounds pretty silly considering what the issue is.

The idea is, everyone can run their communities as they like… Even with such stupid rules as no pictures in a lawn comm, or US politics only in a politics comm on a world instance. Kinda sad in such cases, but otherwise the mods and admins are there for mostly good reasons.

You can almost always find comms or instances more to your liking, or try and start your own.
