There were far simpler castles mechanisms devised. But the G11 fired caseless ammo, rotated it 90 degrees and more importantly had a unique feature where the barrel and magazine recoiled together and could load and fire a burst of 3 rounds while they continually recoiled before starting to return to battery.
I wonder if the G11’s mechanism is so overengineered because it uses caseless cartridges.
