The Sun beats down on my back
But I shiver from the cold
Small in the sea at the track
Of people far younger; I’m old
I would rather be out the front
    With the protestors and signs
But it would be insulting, an affront
If the ticket paid for I declined
So I drink too much and run away
To smoke away from the crowd
Of wealth and youth led astray
By bets, in debts they drown

    Watched a few movies. :)

Heads up. Amazon is removing The Hobbit movies from their list in a week.

Such beautiful movies I could watch them all the day. Everything is a joy to see and the story is good too.

The costumes , the jewellery, the furnishings, the weaponry, armour, the calligraphy, the saddlery and other leather work, the carpentry. All the artisan work is so beautiful.

My favourite scenes are the Stone Giants, reading the moon runes, Kili and Tauriel, and finding the gate.

Anyway, it made me remember I have two acorns I picked up in the oak forests of Pennsylvania on a stop over on a road trip with my bestie Tam. I’m keeping them until I have my own settled place when I can try to grow some oak trees.

So I watched The Hobbit trilogy for about the tenth time and I think I get why they are flawed. It’s not something I’ve read, 99% of lotr fans say it’s because it doesn’t follow the books or is childish or has extra story lines.

To me that’s not a problem, movies are a different form of storytelling and books needs to be adapted and changed for the screen.

I think it’s flawed because there are two voices in the story telling. The first is story telling as a child’s story. This has world building and explanations. I really don’t enough about writing to explain, I just know it when I see it.

The second voice is the same voice we hear in the LOTR movies, adult story telling. The world is not explained, it is.

Mixing the two doesn’t work. I’m surprised at jackson , walsh and boyens , they know better.

So I agree that 2 movies was a necessity if they wanted to tell the story of the geopolitics of middle earth and the hobbit story.

      It’s still really good tho.

It has been many weeks now that I have been feeding the birds again. The garden pots have been cleaned of all bugs and currawongs and fairy wrens have started to visit again. 🙂

Had a picnic with the uni gardening group I’m in today. It was really nice to chat to everyone.

There’s an avocado tree that was planted at the beginning of the semester with two avocados. I hope I will be given an update when they’re ready to harvest.

I will miss this uni because of the familiarity, but the garden is what I’m sad about leaving. I’ll go back to visit if I’m ever in the area :)

If the avos were planted as fruits at the beginning of the semester, you’ve got several years to wait for harvestable fruit. If the trees have fruit on them already, well, the fruit doesn’t ripen until removed from or falls off the tree. Ripening then takes up to 60 days and can be longer depending on storage temperature. They might be waiting for the fruit to get bigger before taking them off the tree, though. This might give you something of a timeline.

Terrible morning. Woke up late, by the time I was ready to leave home I was going to miss the next train and the one after that wasn’t for 25 minutes for some reason. Got to train station only to realise that I left my laptop charger at home. Had to watch the train go by that I would now miss. Back home, then back to station, just made the next train. When I got to Parliament to catch a tram to my co-working office, there was a protest happening so all trams going in the direction I needed to go were stuck. I then had to walk 25 minutes from the city, carrying two bags mind you. It was really comical how nothing lined up for me today. On the bright side, I got a lot of steps in this morning and had a really good coffee once I finally arrived.

did a rough memory inventory, realised I shoulda had about four irrigatias unaccounted for. Found the last five. Now cleaning up, cycling batteries, fixing diaphragms and all that fun stuff while I inventory 6 years of organically grown watering equipment ripped out and taken with us.

I freaking HATE when you order a coffee with alternate milk. Say a flat white with Oat. You say that to them. They make it and announce “Flat white?” and you go “With oat?” and they go “… yyyyyyyyyyyyyyyes…” in a REALLY uncertain tone.

Takes all my effort to not lock eye contact and say “Cause bro, if it isnt, and I shit myself to death your gonna experience exactly what this will feel like when I get my hands on you”.

Yeah, I got one that served me lactose free as if it was the same thing.

What part of OAT did you not understand?

Chillies have finally been planted out. They’re so small. Spent months worrying about watering / hardening them up in the sun / led lighting / temp and figured fuck it close enough in we go. Will be interesting to see if I jumped the gun. Really slow growing varieties and you sometimes wonder if you’ve buggered something up. Needs more soil / compost but that can wait.

But the rest of the gang is getting there:

I’m going to ask a silly question because Im not a gardening enthusiast but, if you were to lay out the irrigation line in an “s” pattern. Wouldn’t that reduce the connection points and therefore reduce chances of failure?

Or would it get too kinky, so to speak.

Yep it would. On a really hot day in summer unclipped it would fail left right and centre. But I ran into a problem where the drip line in an S or continuous line couldn’t quite deliver the same amount of water to all corners of the bed.

I ripped up another large irrigation system a few years ago and ended up with hundreds of clips and connectors and thought bugger it smoke 'em if you got 'em heh. I had doubts but 4 years in no failures (yet).

edit yea in terms of the kinkiness that was pretty much the issue. Angles were too tight and I just couldn’t keep it in place with pegs etc.

edit 2 the other thing is redundancy. If there was a blockage in a continuous line then downstream has an issue. I figured (rightly or wrongly) that a sort of manifold type thing would resolve that.
