It’s about some veterinarians in the 30’s. It’s slow, doesn’t have any sex, violence, or profanity. It’s wholesome. It’s filmed in the absolutely gorgeous Yorkshire Dales. We love it and have already watched 2.5 seasons in 3 nights.
Sorry to tell you but it’s all shot on green screen.
Northern England is a desolate wasteland full of ne’erdowells, rogues and naves. Everything is decaying mining towns and abandoned shipyards. The kids are, er, feral and will mug you for your shoes, and, er, hmm, other stuff.
You don’t want to come here, honest.
Source: I live in Newcastle, a famously dead town with absolutely nothing to offer, and definitely no nice pubs or architecture, where the locals literally eat outsiders.
(for those confused, this is essentially a quote from the show)
I have no idea if this is serious or not. I think it is, but what?!?
Based on the James Herriot books written by Alf Wight, a real vet. I’ve not seen the newer version, but the original series has the late great Robert Hardy and had some lovely Yorkshire dialect. I grew up near the area and some of the characterisations of people were very recognisable when I was a kid.
I remember reading those books as a kid. They were pretty interesting if I remember correctly.
My parents loved this show. We used to watch it after “Jeeves and Wooster” on local pbs. I’ve been meaning to sit down and watch them again with my kids. Thanks for the reminder.
This one is PBS too, but it’s a remake. I never saw, or even heard of the original.
What? They remade it? I will have to look into that, thank you
Yup, and it’s very good. 8.6 stars on IMDb. It’s a refreshing breath of fresh air. We were so tired of every show being murder, or cops, or serial killers, or whatever.
