Summary

Trump plans to impose tariffs of up to 100% on semiconductors manufactured in Taiwan, aiming to push U.S. tech companies like Apple, Nvidia, and AMD to produce chips domestically.

The tariffs target Taiwan’s TSMC, a key supplier, despite its partial U.S. production in Arizona.

Trump criticized Biden’s CHIPS Act for funding companies like Intel and proposed tariffs as an alternative incentive.

Experts warn the move could raise prices for electronics as most TSMC chips are assembled in Asia before export to the U.S.

That’s… All of them, the dumb fuck. The factories we started building to being done production here, aren’t finished yet. We’re about to have the covid chip shortage all over again.

    Also H1Bs…gone. Puff!

Man, at my last job I knew a bunch of guys doing such great job. Very dedicated people who were always very nice and super bright. We’re gonna send them to India where they can develop the country and outcompete us.

    That sounds fantastic.

This is probably one of the biggest economic shot in the foot ever. Let’s wait what his billionaire owners will order him to do to fix that.

Didn’t he just shut down American chip manufacturing, too? How can the broligarchy rule over us if we can’t afford computers?

Sorry it’s a Fox link, but it was the top result.

Basically the dumbass is knee-jerk undoing everything Biden did because it was done by democrats, and of course doing it without thinking about the results.

So kill the CHIPS act because Biden bad, and slap tariffs on random shit because of something someone told him once that foreign stuff = bad and it makes him look strong, but never actually think that harming your own technology production + jacking up prices on your imported tech might be a shitty combo for your citizens and businesses.

He seems to think that doing this will force manufacturers to build in the US, versus the Biden approach of incentivizing them to do that. What he doesn’t realize this will do is raise chips prices and manufacturers will simply pass that cost onto consumers.

I suspect this is part of his strategy to hand Taiwan over to the PRC, if “strategy” can be used to describe anything he does.

Does he, or does he just say he does? His latest Tariff plan tariffs Canada/Mexico more than China. China gave him all of those trademarks tok.

Yes because Apple and the likes will go biiiiig on investing now to make their own chips.

Obviously not. They will just wait a few years until Trump has officially and permanently fucked off from the white house.

Biden, in last few weeks, made a very aggressive anti-Nvidia move in limiting AI processing sales severely to all but US’s very closest allies. Trump has antagonized most of these allies already. But datacenter costs in US going up very significantly from these new tariffs, in addition to forcing extremely expensive extortionist energy on America, is pretty sure to make datacenters outside of US far more profitable, and an extreme likelihood of a black market to both get chips to tier 2 and tier 3 nations, as well as to US consumers.

Adding to this windows attempts to end all support for windows 10, obsoleting a large number of computers later this year. I never thought I’d say this but Linux has never looked better…

This would only work if the tariffs were bipartisan, and clearly here to stay, and even then only if the USA alone is a big enough market to justify building a factory for.

Otherwise companies will just wait it out.
