Hi, I checked out piefed, signed up and used it, and like it. But it seems like all or many of the posts there are from Lemmy, or was my imagination, or how to know?

Anyway, what is supposed to be better about Piefed? Again I am open to it, just curious. I will say it loaded fast, that was nice. Thanks!

It is a different server software for the same federated and shared network or ecosystem if you so will. So it’s a different perspective, but on the same underlying users and posts.

You might want to read about the “Fediverse”. We’re a big(?) network of interconnected instances. The Fediverse spans across different servers and even software. And they all offer different features and focus on different things. But everything is supposed to be interconnected.

Yep cool thank you. I’ve been using Lemmy for a couple of years now (just I switch usernames sometimes) so am just curious about features and advantages either platform may have. Thanks!

PieFed and Lemmy (and Mbin and Friendica, etc.) are all interconnected via the ActivityPub protocol. Think of a fleet of boats all passing messages around to one another: from PieFed.social you have access to messages that came from Lemmy, and vice versa.

Even when you look at content from Lemmy though, it looks different when viewed from PieFed: the communities are organized into Topics/Categories, the side-bar text is viewable from every single post not just the community page, there are messages for certain instances like Beehaw to help explain how that one differs greatly from the normal, and so on. The set of features available is also different - e.g. you can subscribe to receive a notification from anything: not just people replying to you but also posts that you did not write, user accounts that you want to follow, entire communities, and so on.

Also, you did that sign-up wizard to get you started by subscribing to communities that you expressed interest in, while if you had signed up with a Lemmy account your Subscribed feed would be entirely empty. So even “the same” content you have already interacted with differently than you would have on Lemmy. If you make an account on Lemmy to also test it out, you will notice that some aspects of Lemmy are more polished than on PieFed (e.g. when writing a post or comment there is an ability to Preview how it will look), and vice versa, but overall it’s a lot easier to get started using PieFed imho.

There are loads more details in [email protected]. Welcome btw!:-)
