    I do my best to check as I’m putting things into my cart, but also double-check at the checkout. I caught a few things that had ‘Canada’ on the front of the box (“#1 brand in Canada!”) that was actually made in the USA. I put it aside at the checkout. Putting it aside at the checkout and demonstrating to others that you won’t buy American is encouragement for others to do the same.

      …or it’s trash the staff needs to put back while thinking some unfair things about you.

      The sad truth is, people knowing your motivations is not a guaranteed thing, and they’re going to misinterpret your actions.

      It’s an OK app, but it has some limitations.

      It looks at the company portion of the bar code, not the individual product.

      I scanned some Kirkland products that are actually made in Canada (toilet paper, oat milk), and it simply identified that Costco is an American company.

      Similarly, I scanned some made in USA but imported and rebranded by a Canadian importer spices and they show up as “this is Canadian”

        I agree it still misses sometimes, but handy nonetheless. Hopefully they keep improving it. I’ve never used the barcode feature. Instead I just snap a photo.

    Fortunately, lots of basic things are actually real easy to figure out even without checking labels. In Ontario at least, milk, eggs, most meat, grains and potatoes are almost all are Canadian, including products that are mostly made from those.

    As long as you cook, it’s real easy to stay on this side of the boarder when it comes to groceries, and a lot of these products already have labels to advertise being local.

    You better believe I was double checking labels last weekend! I’ve also decided to look into local farms to get those bi-weekly produce boxes this summer as an extra nail in the coffin.
