I’ve always like the way Sam Harris describes this in Letter to a Christian Nation:

It is, therefore, not an exaggeration to say that if the city of New York were suddenly replaced by a ball of fire, some significant percentage of the American population would see a silver-lining in the subsequent mushroom cloud, as it would suggest to them that the best thing that is ever going to happen was about to happen: the return of Christ. It should be blindingly obvious that beliefs of this sort will do little to help us create a durable future for ourselves - socially, economically, environmentally, or geopolitically. Imagine the consequences if any significant component of the US government actually believed that the world was about to end and that its ending would be glorious. The fact that nearly half of the American population apparently believes this, purely on the basis of religion dogma, should be considered a moral and intellectual emergency.

Yep - my mother is one of them - she won’t admit it directly, but it’s clear from some of the stuff she says.

It’s scary shit - I think there are three different “accelerationist” groups trying to destroy society as we know it. The christians waiting for the rapture, Curtis Yarvin’s tech bros that want to build their techno feudal cities and the extreme preppers that want to see some return on their investment. Have I missed anyone?

Well, there’s the salty fuckers like me who’ve lost every last shred of hope in humanity, and now see the best outcome as humans going extinct in a way that as minimally damaging to other lifeforms as possible.

Misanthropic Anti-Natalists… Yeah Humans are a net-negative for this planet and it’s other lifeforms.

I’ve had my ups and downs like anyone else - I don’t consider myself an outlier on either end.

What gets me is repeatedly seeing how we treat each other as a species or in who we choose to represent us when given the option. For example, we love to bitch about Trump (self absolutely included), but Trump is only an issue in the first place because a solid third of our voters looked at that evil fucker and decided: “Yup! This is the guy that’s best aligned with my interests!” …and another third of our voters were, at best, okay enough with that that they couldn’t even be bothered to color in a quarter-inch rectangle in opposition to it.

I’m thankful as fuck for the exceptions, and do what I can to place myself among them, but the general rule I’ve observed is that humans are evil, greedy, spiteful sacks of shit who ruin whatever and whoever they can.

…and that’s speaking from the relatively comfortable position of a 1st world country (if we can still call ourselves that) with a job that pays well enough that I can reliably pay the bills and put food on the table. But I look outside my little bubble, and it’s just a sea of people suffering at the hands of their neighbors and leaders. We don’t deserve to be the dominant species here.

    Hey, hey. Hey?

    They knew.

    They always knew.

They don’t give a crap about his morals, they just wanted to ban abortion and push their radical political agenda for a theocratic fascist state onto a fully captive set of government branches.

They succeeded on all counts. So… who’s the idiot here?

I think some of them are legit trying to speed run the rapture. Trump checks many of the antichrist boxes.

        There’s always the true believers.

In my experience, though, you get a lot more true believers on the parts that are also super convenient for your immediate political and personal goals.

Remarkable that there are people who think this guy is the literal second coming, but the ones who are critical of him are the ones with a derangement syndrome.

Maybe they are illiterate and just can’t tell Jesus of Nazareth from Jesus of Narcissism.
