Prompt: a sumi-e drawing of a grotesque ostrich-like alien made of chitin and bone, sumi-e drawing --ar 3:4 --s 55

So I was playing around with the sumi-e style and combining it with animal-like aliens. Apparently alien, chitin and bone heavily implies skulls. A lot of the rejects were just weird combinations of limbs and bony torsos but some turned out quite nice (but still weird). Here are a couple of bonus ones with the word ostrich replaced with other animals:

Another ostrich

A bird

Another bird (apparently)

An insect

A lizard

That ostrich riding a bicycle

This one is an experiment in character continuity.
I had to include it because it makes me giggle every time I see him :)

It reminds me of the drawings in the Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark books! I used to get them from the library when I was a kid and the drawings were always the scariest part lol

That does sound funny, now that I think about it :)

our dear ai is a loyal student of luke preece, it seems

you may remember some of his illustrations, if you’re old enough, from many album covers and tShirts of 90s

Never heard of the name but the art is definitely familiar. Thanks for sharing, this really looks awesome!

It’s interesting that midjourney has an extensive repertoire of bare bug and reptile knees, but seems befuddled by boney bird knees. It’s still fantastic art.

It’s interesting that these all look like rip-offs of Stephen Gammell’s art.

I’ve been going through some of his work and I can definitely see the resemblance! Maybe it’s the ink work or the skulls that makes it look alike? It’s funny because I never mentioned him by name in the prompt (I never even knew of him until now, thank you for that!) and it still looks alike. I guess the themes overlap a lot with his work.

I originally wanted to create something in the sumi-e style like this bug:

But I guess what I wanted was too detailed to put in this kind of painting style.

I guess these AIs are trained on real artists, so it should be too surprising that the result resembles some artists’ work!
