I’m in the portage lakes area, I like it here! Low COL and I have a decently paying WFH job that just makes it better.
I’m considering moving to Ohio. Any potenial downsides I should know about?
Ohio
I’d def watch out for that
Gov. Mike dewine.
We get all seasons so you never really adjust to anything. In Texas for example you know exactly what the weather is going to be in summer. Hot, sunny, probably windy. And for winter it’s around freezing at night and 60s and 70s in the day.
Ohio is all over the place. Summers can be hot and muggy or you’ll get all day rains. Winter can be 60’s one day and single digits with several inches of snow the next. Many places have similarly unpredictable weather but if you’re from out west it might take some getting used to.
I’m from Utah and we got some wacky weather here too, haha! It’ll be interesting to see how it compares
Real answer is, unless you are moving to the northeast you are going to be living in Trump country. Otherwise Ohio is great. I work all around the country, typically one city for roughly two to four weeks in an airbnb. I’ve been all over, really Cleveland area is just as good if not better than 98% of the US metropolitan areas
Columbus and Cincinnati?
That depends. Cities are fine aside from the government. Stay in the cities.
What’s wrong with outside the cities? Just politics and general redneck stuff or something else?
Politics, general redneck stuff, bored cops, general rust belt stuff. Also lots of racism.
Additional thing to know, Ohio has a very self deprecating sense of humor. One of our classic jokes is that Ohio has produced more astronauts than any other state: this is proof that nothing is too much effort to get as far away from Ohio as possible.
That makes sense. I’ve seen lots of people dunking on Ohio around, but it seems like most of the jokes aren’t really based on anything unique to Ohio. Seems like there definitely is some not-so-great stuff going on there, but the same could be said for any other state. That’s why I wanted to ask, since sometimes it’s hard to tell if it’s just jokes or actually based on something.
Yeah so there is one big unique thing. Nobody is more gerrymandered with one tie (I think it was Florida).
For example as to how bad the government represents us we have a special election next month to change the state constitution to raise the percentage of votes (of citizens, not politicians) it takes to amend it. This is because in November our draconian anti abortion laws are up for vote to be repealed and will probably succeed if any majority wins
What part are you looking at?
Columbus. Or the surrounding area
It’s been a while since I’ve lived in that area, but the greater Columbus area is pretty nice. Generally speaking, as long as you are within an hour of bigger cities like Cleveland, Columbus or Cincinnati you’ll be fine. Things get pretty red further out. There’s parts of outer Ohio that are straight up Appalachia.
What’s wrong with Appalachia? I think folks have the wrong perception of “pretty red”, people are still people. I’m originally from Appalachia Ohio and go back frequently. People are genuine and nice there. Just because some folks don’t agree politically doesn’t mean they are bad people. There are left and right in my home town and everyone is nice and civil to each other. I now live in a large Ohio city and there is just as much political diversity.
I don’t have a problem with Appalachia. I’ve moved all around the country and spent time living in almost every group imaginable. I agree that the people themselves are likely to be lovely once you get to know them. My issue is that I’m not fond of people who actively vote against their self interest. When you get ab hour or two outside metropolitan centers in Ohio, you’re deep into Trump country… by which I mean people who have numerous flags in their yards, stickers all over their trucks. Not to mention an unhealthy amount of confederate battle flags.
The Maga cult is a literal lifestyle choice in parts of Ohio, and if I were not a cis white male, I wouldn’t feel comfortable in these areas. The reason why is because these people who REALLY ARW warm and friendly when you first meet them, they are the same people who have alarming amounts of Trump paraphernalia. It’s a cult. Plain and simple. And no amount of “they’re hearts are in the right place” makes up for the fact that they not only vote for, but loudly share their deep love for a man who literally represents the absolute worst of America.
The people aren’t the problem. Their beliefs are.
Outside of Cincinnati, it’s one big downside.
I don’t understand the hate that Cincinnati people have for the rest of the state. I went to UC but I’m from Cleveland and I’d recommend either city to someone.
I’m not from Cincinnati, but I spent a few transient months there a while back. I’m NE Ohio born and raised, spent a lot of time in Cleveland and the surrounding neighborhoods and I would definitely never recommend Cleveland over Cincinnati, with the one exception being that Cleveland has a generally better music scene.
Cincinnati has an amazing music scene. Don’t forget, there are reasons t swift choose here over other cities in the area.
I spent a month in Cincinnati and absolutely loved it. Downtown is so walkable and there’s so much to do.
Wait a minute. I also went to UC and I’m from Cleveland. Are you me?
Why?
Is it really living? I simply exist in Ohio.
NOhio
I am one of those people. My daily life is literally Hell on Earth. There’s a reason one of our most famous landmarks is a road sign that says “HELL IS REAL,” because for us it is. Every. Day. Of. Our. Lives.
Ahh, the Hotel Royal. Last I heard, that building has been bought and is in the process of being turned into a boutique hotel.

God bless those people
The meekOhioans shall inherit the Earth
Hey don’t call me out like that you barnacle
But Bowling for soup told me there was nothing wrong with Ohio.
Yeah hawthorn heights told me Ohio is for lovers
Isn’t that Virginia?
… I don’t think hawthorn heights would lie about this
Andrew McMahon told me he has to get out of Ohio.
Ok, So it needs a few trees. $500k. final offer.
Oh wait, is this in columbus?
Go to Columbus or Cincinnati, stay away from Cleveland.
I was told Cleveland rocks though.
If you mean crack rocks, you’re right.
That depends. lol
Me, in Akron: 💀
Lmfao. It’s not bad there. I mean depends on where in Akron.
People who say Akron is bad are people who have never experienced living in a bad neighborhood.
I honestly always thought Akron was a fancy area. I always took my wife to their cool outdoor mall there. Pretty fucking fancy if you ask me. Send them to south Euclid and around downtown Cleveland and then we will see if they complain about Akron. 😂
To what “cool outdoor mall” are you referring? I’m not being glib, I honestly don’t know.
I don’t know if it’s a mall, but it is a bunch of shops and restaurants in a really fancy area. Crocker park is what in referring to
Lol. Crocker park? That’s not Akron, dude. Not even close. It’s in Westlake, which is in Cuyahoga county… and is considered a proper suburb of Cleveland.
Oh shit, well I guess my wife is high then. 😂 I personally don’t know.
Boo!
I was about to say the opposite lolol. Cleveland is the only place worth living in Ohio, why do you hate it?
People suck here.
Why?
Right on. I work from home, too. I’m on the east side near Willoughby and I love it here.
