On X, political commentator Ed Krassenstein, a frequent Trump critic, commented on the change of opinion about polling numbers among the former president’s supporters.

“MAGA is breaking down. They are back to calling the polls fake just because they don’t reflect what they want them to say,” Krassenstein wrote. “It’s funny how they touted the polls when Trump was up.”

Nah, I hate this narrative. I’m sure he thought he would win, but I think it would have been pretty close with Biden ultimately prevailing. We’ll never know now. But saying Trump was a lock is ridiculous.

Not after that debate where Biden looked like shit. You gotta remember how fucking little normies pay attention to politics. That debate was probably the first time most of them had seen Joe Biden in a long ass time, and he looked bad.

It would be as simple as “I’d better vote for the one who’s not gonna die in office”; which is honestly the stupidest take imaginable, but they have been defunding our schools for 60 years so what did you expect?

i’m learning from my interactions from lemmy.world that this statement defines so much of what’s wrong.

… they have been defunding our schools for 60 years so what did you expect?

i think this is one the reasons why and i also think that there are other just/almost-as-big reasons as evidenced by roughly 1/4 of my 1st-generation-american college-educated extended-family members loving trump; and somehow it’s mostly the boomer & gen-x aged ones while the millenials and gen-z vote the other way.

I had and still do have a gut feeling it won’t be close and Trump gets shit stomped. Probably just high on hopium, but while the media had been talking about his leads, I just got more vibes that he didn’t have the same support and his voter base has been shrinking. Biden wasn’t inspiring, but I don’t think trump gained more supporters over the past 4 years, and I don’t think Biden had lost many. If people show up and vote, Trump will lose. With the new spark in the Dem candidacy, I expect an ass kicking barring something happening over the next few months.

It’s still early to be optimistic but I agree with you. The whole country has seen and knows what Trump is, he is no longer an unknown quantity. He’s not an outsider fighting the system and a competent businessman like people thought he would be in 2016. The Clintons and their baggage are also out of the picture and dems are rallying behind the energy that Kamala has brought. There’s a reason why Trump and his camp are panicking.

      Honest question, as a non-American.

Surely any and all secret services will be fully prepared this time, and if some MAGA nutjobs were to try it would result in an absolute massacre, right?

Would they be dumb enough to try? I know that you’re all armed to the teeth, but the US Army and Secret Service versus a bunch of cousin-fucking redneck bois is likely to end up in the former winning pretty handily.

Remember that fascists think of their enemy as being both weak and strong at the same time. This gives them a blind spot where they’re incapable of weighing their enemy’s true strength.

They’ll try, but they’re not as strong as they think they are. The number of Trump voters actually willing to get violent isn’t very big. Could get very bloody in a short period of time, but they’ll ultimately lose.

I think the bigger issue this time is the potential for distributing the violence to smaller markets, so to speak - polling places, county clerk’s offices, secretaries of state, even state houses when they vote to certify their state results.

If the election is contested, then there are “backup” protocols that are different than than the normal electoral college. I don’t recall if the “backup” protocol was a simple vote in the House of Representatives, or that each state gets a single vote. Trump kinda tried last time but didn’t have the support.

If a states count is contested, it’s voted on by the house on if the count goes back to the state and redone. If the numbers aren’t ratified by the deadline, the backup is the chain of succession until it is ratified. This means that the house speaker is acting president until they finalize the winner.

To be fair, before Biden stepped down all the neoliberals called polls fake. And as soon as they started showing Kamala in the lead they act like they’ve always trusted polls.

No they didn’t. I’ve literally never once experienced that except from a conservative who is losing.

“Fuck polls” is not the same as “polls are fake”. In one, it’s being suggested they’re not always a great data source so vote regardless. In the other, it’s suggested “they are made up to manipulate the public because everyone persecutes us.”

Nobody on the left was saying the polls were fake because they skewed left. They were saying the polls were unreliable because they skew right toward older voters who answer phone calls and polling questions. But also regardless polls aren’t votes and a lot of people sleep on politics until immediately before voting.

That’s not how polls work. If they get disproportionately fewer responses from millennials, they weight their responses to account for the actual number of millennials. They don’t just give every responder equal weight and assume there are simply fewer millennials.

If done properly, yes. But even then, you can’t account for all the fundamental demographic biases in people who respond vs don’t. As always, the only poll that matters is the election.
