Edit: many news agency are calling PA for Trump. So we are truly fucked.

Unfortunately, at some point you have to come to terms with the fact that you’re sharing your country with a bunch of racist morons, and them plus the group who shift with the wind, don’t check candidates’ promises against the facts and apparently have no moral principles equals enough people to win the election.

It is fucking depressing. I feel for you all. When Britain showed it’s true colours I left the country. Same problems, fortunately not as bad an outcome (although still pretty bad).

I hope the DNC learns from this. They won’t, but I hope they do anyway.

Democracy dies in broad daylight, it turns out.

Everyone who voted for Trump knew exactly what they did. Everyone who didn’t show up to effectively vote against him had every way of knowing exactly what they were doing as well.

No excuses. This is America. Maybe they just hate women. Maybe they simply love fascism. Doesn’t matter. This is who they are.

The next years will be a fight unlike anything. And no matter how hard the better angels of American society fights, it will still be a tragedy unlike anything we can currently imagine.

As an American who voted against him to save democracy here, I can’t even sleep. If it wasn’t for my girlfriend and my family I would have probably killed myself tonight. Dark days ahead, of a scale I can’t even imagine. The worst part is the feeling of betrayal by my countrymen. I don’t belong here anymore, but I can’t leave those I love.

I have a girlfriend and family and yet I’m still considering ending it all. Someone please bring me strength. My entire family is either against me or apathetic and I just can’t take it anymore. I’ve struggled with depression all my life but between losing my job recently and seeing these election results, I think I’ve reached my breaking point.

No sleep will come my way tonight, either. I plan on continuing to drink and smoke until I pass out but I’m only going to regret this tomorrow once the hangover kicks in and brings me to an even lower low. I don’t know what else to do, though. I’m surrounded by fucking idiots who obviously didn’t realize just exactly what was at stake for the future of not only the county, but the whole god damn planet.

I know I’m screaming into the void here but like so many other of us, I need to fucking vent. Either help me or ignore this comnent; nothing matters anymore.

Edit: you have no idea how of an impact you’ve just made with your words. These are dark times but we’ve all been through worse. Thank you for the hope, and here’s to a scary and uncertain future. 🎉😭

Your girlfriend will surely miss you. Please don’t do anything rash.

I am here in the void with you, and I can hear your screams. You matter to me. We are surrounded by fucking idiots, and I feel a little less alone thanks to your comment. Something within you motivated you to make this comment, to ask for help. Hold on to that. I hope you will stay here.

It’s honestly not that bad. Yeah, Trump sucks and we’ll probably see some regression in a few areas, just like we did in his first term. But we got through that and things are still pretty okay. I’m guessing we’ll see some inflation as well, but nothing nearly as bad as we saw just after COVID, and we got through that.

Turn off the news and do things you enjoy. Cuddle with your girlfriend and vent your frustrations. Yes who the President is matters, but it matters a lot less than many people like to claim.

Good luck sir or madame, we’ll get through this together.

This makes me wonder tho. In movies, the US president is often portrait as whoever is president. During the clinton and bush years, the president was a white haired older guy. Later it was sometimes portrait as either a black person or just obama himself. Before all that it was often just basically nixon. But there was never the fat idiot. Now the fat idiot is gonna be president for 8 years, is hollywood just gonna ignore that or is anyone having the balls to portray the president as a incompetent grossly overweight idiot?

I’m so tired of being the Cassandra of my social life - I call this shit out years ahead of time and nobody believes me or takes my analysis seriously because I said that I’m a communist. Like, holy shit, yes, I am a communist - I want workers to own the entirety of society. That’s the exact opposite of these fascist fucks who essentially want bosses, money and corps to control society. I’m a communist because I saw this fascism coming, I recognized the patterns and incentive structures in society, and realized communism is the best way to defeat fascism - we have to decisively win the class war. And this is a war, don’t confuse it. Mark my words, now that things have gotten to this point, massive violence is inevitable soon.

I don’t think people will commit massive violence to save their rights. The majority just conforms to the regime (which many of them voted for and are comfortable with) and the minority is too weak. I think they’re going to obey and suffer quietly rather than risk direct oppression. Just like in other totalitarian countries.

Nope but honestly what I expected.

To quote the great George Carlin

Now, there’s one thing you might have noticed I don’t complain about: politicians. Everybody complains about politicians. Everybody says they suck. Well, where do people think these politicians come from? They don’t fall out of the sky. They don’t pass through a membrane from another reality. They come from American parents and American families, American homes, American schools, American churches, American businesses and American universities, and they are elected by American citizens. This is the best we can do folks. This is what we have to offer. It’s what our system produces: Garbage in, garbage out. If you have selfish, ignorant citizens, you’re going to get selfish, ignorant leaders. Term limits ain’t going to do any good; you’re just going to end up with a brand new bunch of selfish, ignorant Americans. So, maybe, maybe, maybe, it’s not the politicians who suck. Maybe something else sucks around here… like, the public. Yeah, the public sucks. There’s a nice campaign slogan for somebody: 'The Public Sucks. F*ck Hope.

I’m Canadian, so maybe I don’t understand US state vs. feds as well as I could. That said, what bit I know points to a federally-mandated nation-wide abortion ban being a mess that would take longer than 4 years to sort out. If Trump individually could stall most of his cases for a year+ then the states, some of which likely enshrined abortion rights into law tonight, will drag it out past this Presidency. Turns out I didn’t understand, and reproductive rights in the US are looking VERY tenuous right now.

My guess is the next 4 years at least will see a big surge in “abortion tourism”, unsafe amateur abortions killing women, punitive reproductive lawsuits, and more horrific cases of women dying in hospitals or being forced to carry rape babies. Especially among the poor who can’t afford to take a quiet trip like the middle class/rich to do the very thing they voted to make illegal.

As an American who follows this stuff pretty closely, a national abortion ban will be opposed in the courts by the states, but it will very quickly get to the Supreme Court to assess the constitutionality of the ban. When congress passes a law, the president signs it, and the Supreme Court rules that the law is constitutional, that is basically the end of it. Our current court will absolutely uphold a national abortion ban.

I think that the only way we avoid a national abortion ban under a Trump presidency is if the House of Representatives refuses to pass the ban. There is a slim chance that would happen but it’s possible.

Oof, I thought the states were more independent than that regarding healthcare in their borders. If that happens you folks are looking at some hard times ahead. All that stuff I edited into the end of my posts will become inescapable. I would find a silver lining in the fact that finally Republican women would be unable to get away with their “the only moral abortion is my own” BS, but I hate the thought of any woman dying or being forced to make desperate choices.

You’re correct that the states are more independent under the current interpretation of the law. GP is expecting the Supreme Court to overturn its own current interpretation to get that national abortion ban through.

I actually think you’re wrong. Having MAGA family members, I tuink they are legitimately brainwashed. They are in a bubble where they don’t hear the bad about Trump. They only hear good things about him and ad things about his enemies. Some of what they hear is true, much of it is lies, all of it is intended to scare.

I think that, had these people heard the same things the rest of us did, at least some of them would be voting differently. Not all, but enough.

Oh I would adopt too. I thought it was stupid to raise kids when I’m broke and facism was knocking on the door.

If my kid was a disabled queer like I am, they’d have a hard time telling me what they are thinking, and I have a hard time understanding direct statements.

If I had sex with someone of color, that kid is even more at risk. It’s not fair to give them a chance to be hated for something they can’t control, and never asked to be targeted for their skin.

It’s immoral to me, and I find people who had kids in the Post-Trump America morons who want more blood on the ground for corporations and water wars.

It’s not stupid to raise kids the right way when facism is knocking at the doors. On the contrary, it is necessary.

For evil to win it is enough if good people do nothing.

And if the fascists win and give the kids scars mentally and physically, they never asked for?

My parents had me and they expected a positive outcome. Then things got way worse without them seeing it happening. My life was set up to be good, they planned ahead. And then it was taken away from them.

Now they had to raise a kid in poverty, have another kid attend classes, as the mom snaps from the stress and abuses all of her family.

You can plan to stop fascism as much as you think you can give birth to the person who cures all cancers or solves world hunger. What you plan for isn’t guaranteed to happen. I expected Clinton to win against Trump. I expected Harris to win against Trump.

And now every child forced into birth from lack of abortion access has a horrid life to live. If they are anyone the Trump fascists hate, they will be bullied or maimed. You can’t lynch someone who’s never been born.

I couldn’t live with my kid being harmed. By myself, trying my best. Or someone acting in bad faith to hurt them. I don’t want to give someone who never asked to be born to ask “Why?”

Well the other side has no such thoughts at all. They multiply without hesitation or second guessing. Unfortunately the laws of evolution are cruel and in such world one can only hope to shape their descendants and what is left there after the departure.

To cultivate our traditions of empathy we must overcome these doubts lest all is left are traditions of facism. And best way to do it is to adopt existing… misfortunes and try to make them more fortunate for the better of everyone.

Those kids were born anyway, the decision has been made for them already. Now the only decision is to be made how to raise them. Avoiding this burden will only make them lost and hateful.

    Facebook.

They’ve abandoned cable, so where does all my conservative family live. Where do they get news and basically their entire world-view?

    Facebook.

And they live in a totally different universe.

Meta made mega bucks electing Donald Trump because he’s so engaging. Trumpism is just too profitable. And I’m not sure I can forgive that in my lifetime.

The DNC has fumbled the bag to an epic degree. You are right that this should have been a slam dunk, easy win for the DNC. Unfortunately, the DNC also thought this race was easily won, so they just stopped trying.

The DNC made overtures toward conservative voters. “We’re gonna build the wall” or “we’re welcoming the Cheney’s into our coalition”. They needed to run on hope and change to activate low propensity voters. Instead, they ran on harm reduction without offering to change things for the better. The message was, “Trump is 100% Hitler, vote for us because we’re only 90% Hitler”.

The least the DNC could have done was lie about doing nice things.

Blaming the DNC has gotten stale and boring. Kamala couldn’t have run a better campaign in how little time there was, she still nailed it. At what point do we just admit that most of the public is just too braindead?

She nailed it? You mean like how for 8 years she thought the border wall is a stupid idea and then suddenly she pivots into “yup, we totally need that wall”? Or when she got all buddy buddy with the likes of Cheney when the core democrats loathe Cheney? She had time to appeal to the republican voters but not to the 16 million voters who voted for Biden and not her? She had plenty of time to nail her campaign and she didn’t.

And I’ll just add this as a non-American. It’s a very American thing to think election campaigns have to be long, because they are long in America. She got over 3 months to campaign and that would’ve been enough time in most countries. Just to give some context: Mexico’s president campaigned for 93 days, Canada’s last federal election was 36 days, Australian president campaigned for 36 days, India campaign was 33 days, Brazil was 90 days.

Because the country, the political climate, literally the voters themselves are different today than they were in 2008. Hate is a disease - it grows and spreads, and it has been actively been cultivated and stoked to great effect ever since 2008. Unfortunately it’s also a snowball running down a hill; if you don’t stop it in time, it becomes unstoppable. And we missed the chance to stop it.

Naww, people don’t like Hitler shit. The average Trump voter has been tricked into supporting stuff like “mass deportation”, but once you ask 'em about specifics, they are not on board.

The problem is that the DNC didn’t call any of this stuff out. The Democrats should have constantly asked, “How are you gonna do mass deportations of 20 million immigrants? Are you gonna kidnap people from their homes? You gonna put them in concentration camps at the border? Tattoo numbers for easy organization?”

The DNC failed in their messaging of calling out the Hitler shit, instead choosing to adopt the Hitler shit. “We’re gonna build the wall to keep bad immigrants out. We’re gonna deport the bad immigrants who are here. We won’t build camps though, only because that would be economically unfeasible.”

To add to this, I saw a Fox News exit poll during the day where immigration was brought up as a topic of concern. About 55% of responses were in favor of making immigration into the US easier while 45% said it was a concern and should be made more strict. The Democratic party lets Conservatives control the narrative and are surprised when their appeasements fall short of expectations within both parties.

We increasingly live in social silos, if you are not a Trumper you will not know about the frequency of the messaging or even its nature most of the time. Like it or not Trump’s words speak to the average American, his speeches align with the explicitly nationalistic, racist and generally hateful nonsense that most of them have been drip fed over the course of their lives via media, religion and education. It brings them a sense of comfort.

Kamala was a great candidate, and they did activate voters that wouldn’t otherwise have voted.

but a national, historical conservative program of voter suppression plus the judges they’ve appointed over the years is difficult to circumvent.

I mean, also apparently enough Americans like rapists that voter suppression matters.

Such a bullshit comment. There was an interview of an elderly woman who said she had switched to Trump from voting democrat because he had built things like his hotel and casino and what the US needed was a builder. People are getting stuck inside of their social network bubbles and not bothering to look outside, while we are also enabling the manipulation of social networks on a whole other level (Elon Musk, X) instead of fighting disinformation and bringing in the sort of controls that television networks once had to be liable for.

Guess Democrats think they can survive a second Trump term. Maybe all that wealth they earned was enough to sell us off. They are about to get a rude awakening. If Trump wins I hope he keeps his promises and hangs rhem first.

I want to wipe the smug smiles off their faces. We better be ready to fight. Because there will be no more elections after Trump wins. Bet you that.
