And right away Republicans would never again win any elections.

Americans would have free healthcare, normal working hours, more paid vacation…

This would be great for America, and super funny for Canadians.

this depends on how many electoral votes canada gets. not to mention that they’d only get two seats in the senate

And it is still for profit, each provider has to make money on patient interactions to cover business overhead. If heath care was truly public the cost of rent, utilities, and wages would not have to compete with the cost of actual medical services.

A new blue state with 40 million people? I don’t think he’s thought this through very well.

According to a Leger poll, 64% of Canadians would vote for Kamala Harris, while 21% would support Donald Trump, with 15% undecided. Conservative voters in Canada were nearly evenly split, with 42% supporting Harris and 45% backing Trump.

Trump would lose the election if Canada were a state, barring any electoral college shenanigans.

Electoral college logic: Alberta gets its own statehood and 25 votes, BC gets 4 votes because it gets absorbed into Washington State, and the Victoria and Olympia Reps have to share one chair in Congress because they couldn’t buy another one somehow.

It’s blue enough as far as presidential elections are concerned. With the electoral college system, you only need a slim majority voting Democrat, and Canada as 51st would reliably provide that. Even where Congress is concerned, it would become significantly harder to elect a Republican majority I think, though there would be more of a battle there.

The logical candidate for 51st state, of course, is Puerto Rico, and the GOP is not super-enthused about them either. It’s hard to say how they would vote long-term, but they certainly have a strong and well-justified hatred for Trump.

When has the population ever mattered? People don’t vote.

It’s a new blue state with a ton of land. Therefore it deserves 150 electoral votes.

These were the jokes that were said and laughed at at the time. “If Trump got in he’d annex Canada”.

Look where we are 9 years later, staring down the fact this guy said this right to the PMs face.

All of a sudden you’d have leftist domestic terrorists to deal with

I don’t think Trump understands how much Canadians hate Americans

      This isn’t a logical statement.

That can be assumed of any statement that Trump makes.

Bully humor and “just joking” are characteristics of the far right though, and they deliberately blur the line between jokes and threats. I’m not particularly reassured that this is where Trump’s mind goes, even if he’d say it’s just a joke.
