I wonder if you could train raptors to take down drones.
yes you can. dutch police and probably some others trained eagles to take down drones, but project was shelved because of lack of interest
Why eagles?
Falcons would be the logical choice, falcons take their prey in the air. Eagles however take prey from the ground.
I daresay interest is likely rising nowadays
It would only be useful for protecting airports from morons. In a war you would have a shot exchange problem if you use highly skilled avian operators against kamikaze drones.
yes actually. I saw a video of training for this long before the war started. Surprised nobody has tried it yet, I assume it’s probably pretty difficult to fight actual birds with controllers and a ton of delay
Well, raptors can take down balloons, so maybe…?
An owl hit a russian drone and sacrificed itself?
Why should it sacrifice itself? There are more than fast-flying kamikaze drones. Smaller spotters or all those improvised models based on commercial quadrocopters with an AT warhead are nice targets for a properly sized bird of prey coming at them like they would hit their regular prey… fast and from top.
In fact there were several project world-wide to actually train birds to hunt down drones. Most were abandoned as fast spinning rotors can be a danger to claws when they get unlucky… but still it’s perfectly reasonable to expect a big owl, eagle etc. to down a drone.
I took it to be a reference to the HUR MOU

Who might be a little sneaky over in Syria at the moment.
What are they doing there?
Context?
owl took down a russian drone
Must have been controlling it with a mouse.
Edit: and I mean a living, terrified little mouse, wearing a little flight suit and aviator goggles and slightly drunk on vodka.
I love it when a plan comes together
