    mtsw on Bluesky:

Since JD Vance just converted to Catholicism 5 minutes ago, he might not know this: the Pope authoring a letter where he goes out of his way to correct you, specifically, is considered “bad” in the Catholic tradition

When the pope told Henry VIII that what Henry wanted to do was a no-no, Henry separated, created Church of England, and made himself its head. What do we think Trump will call the new Christian denomination in America and what will be the title of its head?

The Pope’s selective outrage reeks of ecclesiastical theater—denouncing deportations while his own empire sits on centuries of plundered gold and complicit silence as right-wing zealots twist scripture into shackles. Charity as performance art can’t mask the Vatican’s hoarded billions or its failure to dismantle systems that create modern Exodus crises.

Trump’s deportation fetish mirrors Roman circus politics—distract the plebs with bloodsport while oligarchs pick their pockets. State-sanctioned scapegoating isn’t governance; it’s the death rattle of empires too bankrupt to fix real problems.

Invoking the Holy Family’s refugee plight? Sacred irony—today’s “Christians” would’ve barred Mary at the border for “illegal entry” and called Herod a patriot. Scripture as a bludgeon only works if you ignore the Beatitudes.

Christian nationalism’s endgame? Theocratic feudalism—crucifixes on flags, borders as moats, and Lazarus left to rot. Piety as a profit model demands enemies, not empathy.

If I go pitch a tent in Vatican City and take up permanent residence there, presumably he will order the Swiss Guard not to deport me. Good to know.

It’s really scary when one has bible thumping relatives calling out the Pope as immoral and extremist, and embracing Donald Trump.

JD Vance is, but he’s basically a bit player in the whole Magaverse. He’s there to break ties and run interference on the stupidest of mainstream media, not to actually have any role in policy.

there’s a whole parish here in my small town that’s all in on the maga juice. bot farms, vpn accounts, fake social media accounts, the whole bit. employees too, not just parishioners. spreading the hate and promoting the maga cult and candidates. just like ‘god’ intended.

Thing is, though, anti catholicism runs deep among the evangelical crowd. This is, as far as the mega (maga) church crowd is concerned, a ringing fucking endorsement of Trump.

as others have said, consort trump is not catholic so he could care less about the pope.

his spiritual advisor believes in prosperity theology.

imo, if you want to appeal to trump, better talk in his spiritual language, money.

Given the rate of executions during Trump’s last tenure, I think it’s feasible he would’ve crucified Jesus for the crime of existing while brown, if given the chance

Maybe he could actually do something about it. Like excommunicating those very religious members of the supreme Court that will support it… Pipe dream. I know.

The Supreme Court is staffed by Evangelicals, which make up the majority of christians in the US of A

Evangelicals and Catholics consider each other heretics and have done so since the reformation.

Edit: The reformation started after the time period historians consider “the middle ages”. Oopsie.

but you see, american “christianity” is different. maga nuts and the far right would say ‘better’ or the only ‘true’ kind.

and “conscience”, well that’s “con”+“science”, they don’t believe in science, so toss that out. leaving only “con” which is exactly what their game is.

The Vatican criticised the Nazis as well, but it didn’t stop Hitler. The problem is that the cat is out of the bag when it comes to far-right in America. The only way to stop the movement is to counter it politically. But the Democratic Party is either too spineless or simply does not care, or both. They would rather lose to Trump than to move further left.

I am not going to explain this to an American for the umpteenth time, the truth of the matter is that, outside of American sensibilities, the Democrats are not leftists. The rest of the world see Democrats as centre right by virtue of their policies. If you put the Democratic Party in Europe, they will have more in common with the conservative German CDU and centrist neoliberal French president Macron.

I’m not sure where you got that I need that condescending lecture. I don’t, and it’s beside the point entirely.

My point was that a protest vote or staying home is somehow forgivable to people like you who rage about Democrats when in reality voters chose this fucking horror show. You’d love for me to believe it’s all the fault of Democrats for being super conservative or whatever, but the evidence in front of us doesn’t support that. It’s just weird speculation in which you choose to blame the party and ignore voters’ bad actions.

It’s quite easy to see the “if I can’t have it my way, trump can fuck everything up” attitude in voters who say they’re leftists, but instead you only see it in Democrats.

Yes, and our culture has changed a LOT since all of that. There is plenty of blame to go around, but I can’t not blame people who can literally look up any information in the world in seconds from a device in their pocket, but instead they simply choose to believe whatever horseshit they already believe. No skepticism whatsoever.

Then other voters who don’t give enough of a shit to even go vote have the gall to want to be seen as superior for that – because they’d rather the world burn if they can’t get their way. Fuck this timeline. Your previous comment suggests you won’t have to suffer this like I will-- I’m American

To be fair, ever since Hillary Clinton paid off DNC debt, the Democratic party turned right and deliberately sidelined more popular left leaning politicians like Sanders and AOC.

The voters are as much to blame but in the way you think. Who are the ones who keep voting down building more affordable housing in solid blue states like California and New York? The same self-proclaimed “progressives” who claim to feel bad for the homeless, are the same ones who will object to building more affordable housing because it will bring down their property value. At the end of the day, it is about the bottomline for many people. If you have watched Squid Game, that is the point the show makes. If given enough financial incentive, a good person could turn bad.

You’re going a lot off hypotheticals. You’re trying to say the election was lost because some closeted republicans voted in their own interests?

How about the obvious explanations which we saw every day? People claiming to be on the left who voted third party or sat at home. And people who voted in 2020 but couldn’t be bothered to vote at all. Those were BAD voter decisions and we know for sure they happened. Grasping at straws to explain the electoral outcome when those are right there in our face… Is concerning to me.

But they would be a move to the left (coming from the current state, which is Republicans).

But apparently most American voters do not want to move left, not even an inch.
