Volunteer James Free was sorting through items in the Portland Rescue Mission’s donation bin when something shiny caught his eye.
Amid all the usual hand-me-downs was a pair of bright gold men’s sneakers without so much as a scuff on them.
He didn’t yet know it, but he’d stumbled upon a pair of extremely rare Nike Air Jordan 3s, custom made for director Spike Lee ahead of the 2019 Academy Awards.
The shoes are now up for auction by Sotheby’s, which estimates they will fetch as much as $20,000 US (about $26,750 Cdn) for the mission. The organization has helped people struggling with homelessness, hunger and addiction since 1949.
“Those shoes are going to provide thousands of meals for people that we serve,” Erin Holcomb, the mission’s director of staff ministry, told As It Happens host Nil Köksal.
“It’s just a really beautiful picture of generosity.”
“It’s just a really beautiful picture of generosity.”
Or was it an incredibly lucky catch after someone, even if they meant well, did something incredibly stupid? Because what are the chances those shoes would have just ended up on someone’s feet? If you’re going to donate $20,000 shoes and don’t want anyone to know you did it, leave it in a wrapped present at the door or something.
And leave a note explaining what it is and what it is worth!

It helps to picture them more like a wearable modern art piece. Like a crown for the feet 😉
Wow. Imagine how many pairs of shoes you could buy instead of buying a $26k pair of shoes.
The shoe didn’t take $26k to make. But it will give some rich fuck an excuse to feel good about themselves, while actually doing some good in a community.
That second part is rare.
Rich fucks patting themselves on the back while making pointless gestures… is sadly not so rare.
As to the shoes themselves, they were custom-made, so likely a hundred bucks at most to Nike, and then were given to Spike Lee and his friends.
So the only time they’ve been “worth” $26k, is now that they’re on auction.
At least 3.
Kinda wanna slap whoever bought it and manufactured it with the $13,000 shoe itself
Edit: after which they will kindly sign and relinquish to me the other in order to cover muh 1) travel 2) per diem, and 3) the edumacation
- I will also be following up with their mama 😱
Probably the owner died and a normal person not obsessed with fucking shoes decided to donate them because they’re shoes that go on your feet not a collector’s item.
I’m with you on this one.
Christ, these comments are a shit show.
yep
