I agree wholeheartedly. My assumption was that such behavior was simply a symptom of the relatively larger proportion of Europeans on this site, and their obvious jealousy and insecurity regarding Americans. I still believe that is the most likely explanation. To be clear, America has done hella dumb shit lately, and is deserving of criticism on many fronts. But what OP is referring to goes beyond that. It’s emotional animosity that overflows the bounds of reasonable criticism and targets individuals rather than governmental decisions or policies.
The number of times that I have seen people refer to the American contribution to WWII as cowardice, meaningless, etc, is too damn high. 400,000 Americans died in that war. Read a fucking history book you ignorant, insensitive fucks.
It’s certainly possible that there are agents in our midst sowing divisiveness, although unlikely. I don’t have any beef with any nationality, because I don’t judge people based on where they were born. That should be common sense, but it’s apparently difficult for some people to wrap their heads around.

I only wish I had screenshotted earlier, but this is what happened a couple days ago when a new SJW user posted a meme to [email protected] about having a rich friend and not feeling comfortable talking with them about their wealth or something like that. The meme was getting upvoted and seemed like good content. Then you fucking jumped down their throat, leading them to instantly delete their account. Somebody reported your comment, but the OP had already deleted their account by the time I saw the report.
What the fuck was that dude? This is why people don’t want to use Lemmy, because there are people like you who act like self-righteous assholes for absolutely no reason. I probably should have banned your ass just for that, but I am decidedly not a power tripping bastard, nor do I intend to become one, despite how tempting it can be when certain users spread misery everywhere they go without technically breaking any rules or crossing any lines.
For the record, I restored your removed comment. That was removed by another mod who I have never met or interacted with in my life. Presumably, he was just doing his job and removing it because it violated some rule about personal attacks or something, but I couldn’t care less, in fact I think it provides even more evidence of your toxic attitude.
And it happens to connect perfectly with the topic of this post, which is another example of circlejerking Europeans doing everything they can to ensure no American would ever want to use Lemmy by acting like morally superior douchebags.
My comment was a response to the OP, a fellow American, expressing frustration with the constant hatred and abuse towards Americans that exists on this platform, which has conveniently been omitted from this screenshot. His post originally read as follows, before he edited it.
Lemmy has a strong tendency to criticize the US, and a lot of the critiques of certain issue with the US are valid. However, I started getting really tired of opening comment sections in innocuous and non-political posts only to see that someone somehow found a way to criticize the US in it. At first, I started thinking that maybe some Lemmy users are really unhappy and find criticizing a something stronger helped them feel better as if standing up to injustice was a passion of theirs. But, we don’t see them do that with other targets, just the US. The more I notice and think about it, I’m starting be suspicious that some of those users and comments aren’t authentic, but made to create divisiveness in the West and reject the US entirely. In other words, they may be Russian, Chinese, et al. agents working to feed a stream of propaganda in order to further cause chaos and lack of unity in the West as we have seen them do before.
This is a real problem on Lemmy, although as I stated in my reply, I ascribe it more to just people being assholes rather than Russian/Chinese agents. All the rest of you smug bastards downvoted the post and gave him 100 different replies that basically boiled down to Deal with it, you deserve it.
I validated his feelings and provided a more reasonable explanation, and he replied (also conveniently omitted from the screenshot)

I only said that once, and I realize it won’t really come off positively for the people I am referring to. Doesn’t mean it’s not true. Sometimes, truth hurts, and if even a handful of people re-examine their behavior and try to act better, it’ll be worth it.

I think this one is fair play, personally, because it begs the question of whether this person is fit to be an admin to begin with.

I disagree. If they have a pattern of behavior to suggest disagreement with them will cause them to abuse their power then sure but there’s no such pattern highlighted here.
Admins have opinions too. There’s no way to avoid it and suggesting that you’re only fit to be an admin if those opinions fall within a narrow palatable range is silly. Unless you’re an NPC you probably have some hot take that would be widely criticized about something. I think our culture right now is way too focused on these types of takedowns. They might be appropriate in a few cases but one bad opinion on something that barely matters is not one of those cases.
Admittedly the whole concept of an admin being elevated above other users is problematic in my view but that’s kind of a separate topic.

If the EU had as open immigration as the US has, you’d see waaaaaaaaaaaay more US citizens moving to the EU than EU citizens moving to the US. That in itself is a power trip (sure, if they are a sole admin of an instance, which they aren’t, they should have the option to dm any user even if they block them, but them being an admin doesn’t mean anyone should be forced to encounter their personal brand of bullshit as they scroll).

In my youth (millennial here) our cultural identity was a culture of tolerance and liberalism. For instance, we were a world leader in gay marriage, weed decriminalisation etc. Now those that talk about “protecting our culture” seem to think that Dutch culture is more or less the same Christian conservatism you see in the US. I find it truly astonishing that a country were crossdressing was normalized in the 60s (if not earlier) now eats up US/Eastern European/Russian anti-LGBTQ propaganda.
