I’d prefer the cryptkeeper surgeon who is at least trying, as opposed to the orange ghoul who is there to harvest your organs for some spare change.

The problem lies with the hospital which allowed those to be the only options to begin with.

I for one would prefer to have my appendix removed by a competent surgeon just over 35 y.o., but until hospital staff management gets their shit together, there isn’t a whole lot one can do.

Many of these folks are still going to hold their nose and vote for Biden. A lot of these takes are valid criticisms without necessarily meaning they aren’t voting for him. Hating every candidate and voting for one anyway is a long standing tradition here in Canada.

THEN OFFER A SOLUTION. GIVE AN ALTERNATIVE.

FFS I am so tired of this. It’s a critique with no idea what to do instead.

        Here are the 4 options

        • Vote Trump

        • Vote Biden

        • Vote 3rd party/independent/write-in

        • Don’t vote

What do any of these critiques do to change this? Are they saying to not vote Biden and do one of the alternative 3 options? What’s the end goal here?

You think people got mad when Hillary Clinton was “selected” at the Democratic Convention after a nationwide series of primary elections and delegates all voted with her as the winner, can you imagine the shitstorm unilaterally picking some other candidate to replace Joe Biden without even the pretense of a primary process?

There was barely the pretense of a primary anyway, no one serious ran against Biden and there weren’t debates and anyone who voted against Biden was screamed at by the entire rest of the Party. People are already pretty mad about that, and then being told “vote for this nursing home patient or the government will kill you” isn’t making it better.

As I said elsewhere, I heard an interesting idea on DemocracyNow

I was trying to lay out a process that would create an organized and very democratic and transparent process to choose a new nominee. It would basically compress the primary process into a month.

There are 400-plus members of the Democratic National Committee. It would convene, nominations would be open, and we would get a requirement that anyone who wanted to be nominated for president or run in this primary would have to have the signature of 40 sitting members of the Democratic National Committee, including at least four from each of the four regions of the party. Now, since there’s only 400-plus members, very few people could actually do that. It would be people that we know. It would be Governor Whitmer, it would be Cory Booker, it would be Kamala Harris and Governor Newsom and Governor Pritzker and maybe Governor Shapiro from Pennsylvania — people who already have a constituency and have states with members, enough members on the DNC that they would be able to get the required 40 in a week’s time.

Then they would begin to campaign. They’d be certified by the secretary as legitimate nominees. They would show they have a national base of support among elected Democratic Party officials. And then the party would organize a couple of town halls, televised town halls, where the candidates would appear. We’d go to the convention, and it would be like the convention of 1960, where it would be wall-to-wall campaigning for delegates, the elected delegates, most of whom are Biden delegates. He would release them.

And it would be pretty exciting. The networks, the media would cover it wall to wall, as opposed to the way they cover these scripted conventions now, which maybe give it an hour or two each night. We’d have nominations from the floor. We’d have the speeches given. We’d have the horse trading taking place between state delegations. And an eventual nominee would be elected, probably after more than one ballot. But people would leave the convention with the new nominee energized, with wind in that nominee’s sails.

The question of “with who” would be answered by an exciting democratic process that would energize the Party for the election.

Are you misunderstanding, responding to folks who are planning not to vote for Biden (who aren’t even mentioned in the post you’re responding to), or arguing it’s not ok to voice criticisms of Biden at all (regardless of whether one plans to vote for him or not)?

I’d love to know what we citizens can do to convince the DNC to stop nominating these out-of-touch antiques for candidates?

I’m serious. Because until we get the DNC to change their behavior, this same shit is going to continue to happen.

There’s a reason why the likes of Bernie Sanders and AOC don’t get nominated. It’s because they won’t toe the line of what the DNC wants.

And voting third party does no good. It’s a losing choice that only helps the republicans; because any vote that is not for the D is a vote for an R.

Third parties do not get fair treatment during elections, so they do not get the same exposure. And everyone knows it’s all about the exposure you get. Mostly through adverts, mailers, phone calls, etc… But also TV airtime, news articles, debates, and so on.

Yeah it’s unfair and it’s bullshit and woulda shoulda coulda. Make all the excuses you want; shit ain’t changing until this duopoly is changed. And right now, they’ve got their heads so far up their asses that they can lick their own uvulas.

So how do we change that? Seriously. Legitimately. Realistically.

Because not voting for Biden is the same as voting for Trump, and goddamnit we cannot survive another term with that poor excuse for a human being.

It doesn’t matter if you literally preface every comment you make with “I AM VOTING BLUE NO MATTER WHO” with these people, every criticism is a psyop to get people to not vote.

You’d think having a candidate that polls like shit would be what makes people not vote for him. But no, it’s actually the fault of the people pointing out he is a bad candidate and that perhaps we should run someone who doesn’t repeatedly shout that “we beat Medicare” in the middle of a fucking debate.

The Democratic establishment fucking loves Trump, the specter of him is a permanent fundraiser and no matter who they trot out or how weak a candidate they are they don’t have to change anything, because the alternative is literally fascism.

Damn. I thought cultish thought-stopping was something we didn’t really have very far left of (what the U.S. calls) center. Would you like to see Democrats comparing Biden to Jesus like the MAGA crowd does Trump? The day the Democratic party becomes just as much of a cult as the Republican party is the day we have two literally fascist parties to choose between rather than a fascist party and still-a-major-win-for-the-fascists-but-at-least-not-quite-as-bad party.

Unless something completely unexpected (like a third party candidate actually having a chance of winning) happens between now and November, I’m voting blue no matter who in the general election. I think everyone else in the U.S. should as well, and I’ll tell them that. But nobody is served by liberals (and lefties) deluding themselves into thinking our choice is between anything other than two unequal evils.

What’s your reasoning here? Are you hoping that if you and I lie and say Biden’s going to fix everything, it’ll get more people to vote blue than if we tell them to vote for the lesser evil (which, to be clear, is the candidate with the D next to their name)? Because I really think the case could be made that the opposite is true. Or do you really think Biden is a perfect, infallable candidate?

Seriously how hard is it to to not pretend people aren’t struggling swallowing it down and the people ringing alarm bells are just that and not some special person trying to influence others but just don’t want to hit the iceberg because it seemed like it would cost less fuel to just try ramming it and hoping we get lucky.

Fuck me. This is gonna be one of those parts of textbooks where it says infighting led to the party not moving fast enough to face the threat and whichever side makes it out the other side scapegoats the other as being the reason it got so bad.

Conservatism is the minority in America, and rarely wins through above average voter turnout, which is why they do everything in their power to gerrymander and disenfranchise voters. That doesn’t change the following facts:

        1. The “resign” efforts are a campaign spearheaded by the fascist propaganda machine (because they have no platform beyond fascist dictatorship).

        2. Anyone and anything, from a dementia ward patient to a wet sack of shit, is more qualified and deserving than every 21st C Republican.

        3. Biden is in noticeable cognitive decline, his debate performance was ridiculous, he probably will not live another 4 years, and isn’t there because he’s the best choice.

There’s a lot of people out there who don’t pay nearly the same amount of attention to the news as the people on lemmy do. You have to work around these groups. This is why being likeable is important. These people lack most of the information, many of them don’t even care. You can’t just sit there and scream at them how they’re ruining their own lives. That doesn’t work.

The time to talk about alternative leadership was two years ago.

This argument clearly only helps the MAGA movement right now. Which means you are either a total fucking idiot, or a fascist pretending to be a Democrat. (I guess you are a fucking idiot either way).

So let’s go with the convicted felon doctor who only saves the patients who donate millions of dollars to him. The hospital fired him but he refused to leave his office.

Sure… but if we’re talking about the presidency, it’s more like we’re choosing a Dean of Medicine, rather than the surgeon who’s going to be doing the operation.

Don’t get me wrong, I would prefer not to have to deal with an 81 year old Dean who had some good days and some really bad ones. But, ultimately, the Dean of Medicine’s most important job is hiring good doctors and then delegating to them. It’s a rare occasion when you know ahead of time who the Dean’s team will be… but in this case we’ve seen both options as Dean, and we know that only one of the two is planning to hire Dr. Nick Riviera and Zoidberg.

And I’m just getting responses about how Biden is better than trump.

Literally nobody here is disagreeing with that.

You’re just making the case that not even Biden supporters can explain why they think he has to be the nominee. At least not a reason that’s not easily disproven.

You do realize Biden has a staff of over 120 people with roles that include trying to control narratives on social media. I think some of these people are legitimate but I can’t help but think some of them are AI bots or staffers working for Biden trying to manipulate the conversations and discussions.

Biden is toast. The sooner Democrats, bots and staff members realize that the quicker we can energize the party with a different candidate that people actually like and that can engage in unscripted questions and policy discussions while speaking from the heart.

But the chances of that happening on Lemmy is almost zero. It’s just a shit return of investment due to the small userbase and engagement.

Lemmy is where people with actual ideas go. Those capable of thinking outside the box. Government usually tries to stay on top of progressive technology because it is where change is actually happening. Twitter, Reddit, etc. is just a bunch of bots competing with other bots.

I’m still willing to hear a viable candidate and how that would work less than half a year before an election. In order for us to have another nominee we have to do something to get someone else to put their name on a ticket. That actions might create a bit of a loophole where any party could run a lame duck candidate in the primary, won, and go on to basically pull that candidate for “cognitive decline”.

What I believe will happen, based on our laws and our history, is w.ell have another Al Gore moment where the vote gets split and we get a Republican as a result. And since right now the Republican is Donald “I touch 13 year Olds” Trump, I’m gonna ask you why a sane person would choose to let Trump become president.

and how that would work less than half a year before an election.

Normal countries don’t have elections that last over half a year. It’s clearly workable everywhere else, and it’s not like the people already voting Biden are going to not vote for whoever the Dem candidate is.

I don’t buy that it would cause confusion or somehow be less viable to change candidates; this isn’t 1880, we have phones and TVs and the internet now. If the candidate changed as little as a month before the election everyone would still know what was going on, even if was a huge pain in the ass to account for in terms of ballots.

"Normal countries don’t have"I’m gonna stop you right there. Because what I am asking is how it works for this election at this time with our constitution, laws, and regulations. Because that is what is pertinent now in the event that he steps down.

As for the bit about them voting for any democrat on the ticket (we know historically that’s not what happens), this is literally what happened with Hilary Clinton. It caused so few people who otherwise might have voted not to vote that we got Donald Trump as president for a first term. It’s not about confusion. It’s about people being disheartened enough to think it doesn’t matter. And believing in the super majority of democrats who will vote so they don’t have to. Because not voting is a form of protest.

People would still know. But the whole reason the media is playing up the age and health of the president currently is to convince people not to vote. And it’s working. There are people in this country who voted for Trump in protest because Bernie Sanders was not ok the ticket.

And if you’re gonna stick your head in the sand and believe that people are going to just vote for whoever they happen to put up as a democrat I’m gonna need you to look back on the 2016 election like I said because we already know this has happened before. Cool, he’s still not the official candidate because he hasn’t been selected at the convention yet. If you’re going to lecture someone for not knowing how the system works you should at least understand that the primaries don’t actually select the candidate, the convention does.

“We have to run a weak candidate that polls like shit because the last time we did this exact same thing we lost but it’ll work this time” is the real head in the sand stance.

Ah, see…that’s where you’ve gone wrong. There is no “finish line”. There is no hands-off autopilot for human society. It’s a never-ending slog against all those people who want to game or corrupt the system for their own uses - which is almost always power or money, but often enough just to wreck everything because they want to watch the world burn.

                Do you understand that?

There are only temporary victories that are immediately followed by trying to keep building the infrastructure supporting the greater good (as difficult as that can be) against those who want to tear it down by any means necessary.

                It doesn’t end.
